Title

A must have for lovers of modern rock.

Days We Are Even are a Zurich based trio hailing from Germany, Switzerland and Brazil. 'Himalaya' is the band's debut release, inspired in the main by the likes of Stone Sour and the more commercial approach of the Foo Fighters. I don't have much information about the backgrounds of the three members and even their names give nothing away...Jo (vocals/bass), York (drums) and Mighty Muzzy (guitar). A reputation for great live performances is already in place and talent is evident due to the quality of this album, written and produced completely by the band.

The musical framework is not overly aggressive but the modern slant marries some cool, riff intensive structures and instant melodies. The first half of the CD is especially strong, generally up-tempo with some subtle shifts in style and pace, by no means progressive, but fresh in terms of the writing approach. Opening track 'Misunderstood' has a strong Stone Sour vibe without being a total copy, the band imbuing every song with their own identity. 'Mescaline' sums up the band's ability to marry styles, especially when it breaks down into a barrage of death riffs and then concludes with some Metallica like ('Nothing Else Matters'), semi-acoustic subtleties. The staccato drum passages are a rolling feature of 'Himalaya' (take a bow York), their ferocity complimenting Muzzy's intense riffage perfectly. 'Pure' and the title track are the best examples; the distinct writing ethic to the fore, repeated plays a certainty.

The second half of the CD is still strong but seems to pale a little against the first five or six songs. The last three tracks, 'Take My Time', 'Seventeen' and 'The Elegance', again show some nice versatility and a more reflective side to the band. They give Jo a chance to be more expressive vocally, but there is little to warrant their inclusion, as these traits are highlighted during other songs. It feels as though momentum is lost by finishing on such a low-key note. They are too melancholic to be inspiring and miss the energy displayed earlier. I would have preferred just 10 songs instead of 12 but my CD player finds this an easy problem to remedy.

A very strong album for the most part and a must have for lovers of modern rock. Granted it won't set the world on fire but how many new releases do these days?
