The band, led by ex-Guns N' Roses drummer Steven Adler, clearly has huge potential.

Eponymously named for Steven Adler the one time Guns N’ Roses drummer, this new band also features the golden tonsils of former Mars Electric and Lynam lead vocalist Jacob Bunton, guitarist Lonny Paul from preceding band Adler’s Appetite plus bassist Jonny Martin. Their debut album has been wonderfully produced by ex Dokken man Jeff Pilson who has not only added his backing vocals and some instrumental input to the proceedings but has overseen a sonically brilliant end product.

I was grabbed by this absolutely wonderful album from the first listen and overall ‘Back From The Dead’ presents a fabulous amalgam of traditional classic and modern rock with some punk, glam and blues influences infused into the mix. Bunton’s powerhouse vocals are ideal for this range of material: deep and sweetly controlled one minute, full blooded and intensely dramatic the next. With his cohorts, the band has melded into a well-oiled machine to present an album chock full of great songs that will have you singing both the verses and choruses of many of them before you realise you are doing it!

The title track opens the album, with a gentle introduction belying the furious, swaggering MHR and lyrical finger wagging into which it quickly evolves. One becomes increasingly aware of the wonderful melodies precisely nailed by the harmony vocals as songs such as ‘Own Worse Enemy’, ‘Another Version Of The Truth’ and ‘The One That You Hated’ issue forth. Then follows two songs each of which feature a guest guitarist: John 5 (Rob Zombie) joins in on ‘Good To Be Bad’ which also features a wonderful, dirty, Hammond organ intro while Adler’s former colleague Slash contributes to the magnificent power ballad ‘Just Don’t Ask’ which is also the album’s longest track.

You’ll surely be suckered into the next batch of songs with their classic riffs, big choruses and magnificent harmonies. ‘Blown Away’, ‘Waterfall’, ‘Habit’ and ‘Your Diamonds’ are all uniformly superb, before the album is drawn to a close with the rather more in-yer-face ‘Dead Wrong’ with its heavy, pounding intro. In truth, there isn’t really a weak link here, as all eleven songs are wonderfully honed MHR tunes, dripping with to-die-for hooks.

I was looking forward to seeing the band on tour this autumn, but it has been postponed due to Steven checking into a rehabilitation centre to continue working on his sobriety: something that has dogged his career for a long time. Adler (the band) clearly has huge potential as demonstrated here. It is to be hoped that this is permitted the opportunity to blossom.
