Well-produced by Pat himself, 'Can Do' fits all the criteria required for a return to the sound of his glory days.

With a latter-day career that has seen Canadian guitarist Pat Travers releasing blues and covers albums almost exclusively, making a new rock album for a specialist melodic rock label certainly seems to have surprised a lot of people. Hardly a surprise to me though as he'd talked about it on his UK tour last year, his band for this album being the same as on the tour, with Pat joined by second guitarist Kirk McKin, bassist Rodney O'Quinn and returning drum legend Sandy Gennaro. Pretty much left to his own devices, Pat's only instruction was to make an album comparable to his seventies and early eighties output and, with one or two reservations, this is exactly what he's done.

The familiarity of 'Can Do' demonstrates just what a unique take on hard rock Pat Travers had, with hints of jazz and funk not seeming out of place amongst his blues-rock roots. Probably most similar to his 'Putting It Straight' and 'Crash And Burn' records, good riffs adorn the rockers 'Can Do', 'Stand Up' , 'Armed And Dangerous' and the stomping 'I'm With You', even if the vocals are a little gruffer than the Travers we're used to. Other styles come into play on the light and funky 'Diamond Girl' and the highly melodic 'Wanted (That Was Then, This Is Now)', and no PT aficionado will be surprised by the jazzy harmonized guitars of the instrumental 'Keep Calm & Carry On' or the twelve bar 'Red Neck Boogie' with its ZZ Top groove and raspy Dave Lee Roth vocal. Similarly the lazy blues of 'Waitin' On The End Of Time' is another highlight and 'Long Time Gone' even has an early Aerosmith chorus, but it's the beautifully arranged cover of the Eurythmics 'Here Comes The Rain Again' that will raise the most eyebrows, not least because Pat's vocals couldn't possibly be more different from those of original singer Annie Lennox.

Well-produced by Pat himself, 'Can Do' fits all the criteria required for a return to the sound of his glory days. His guitar playing is faultless and his band play their parts admirably, my only concerns being the loss of the smooth edge to his voice and the fact that the album lacks the truly killer songs of yore. Perhaps the fact that it's on Frontiers Records will saddle 'Can Do' with expectations that it's something that it's not, but for long-time Pat Travers fans there's enough hope here that his return to the hard rock world will not be short-lived.
