If you like the heavier but still melodic side of metal, then this album has all the tools at its command to make you a believer.

Some of you will undoubtedly be familiar with the name Vindictiv, a band put together by guitarist/songwriter Stefan Lindholm in 2004. Their first two releases can be found reviewed (with praise) on many prog rock sites around the web and also in earlier issues of this very magazine – and rightly so, as both albums are filled with a highly melodic style of symphonic prog metal that many of you espouse.

The two albums featured the silky smooth vocals of Göran Edman, which gave them a certain style and sound. For album number three, however, Vindictiv main man Stefan Lindholm has thrown away the prog rock instruction manual and has instead picked up "The How To Play Power Metal" handbook, which has resulted in a new heavier Judas Priest/ Primal Fear Euro metal-influenced CD

Now this is quite a change for the band and its music and it took me a while to get to grips with the new sound; and if you've heard the first two albums (and enjoyed them) you might, at first, be confused by the change of approach in the Vidictiv camp. That said, please stick with this release because as heavy as it is, it still has ten exciting, powerful, melodic metal songs that tear at your face the minute you hit the play button.

New vocalist Marco Sandron (Fairyland/Pathosray) brings to the table a vocal roar tempered with a heartfelt emotion that most singers would kill for; and on songs like 'Down In A Black Hole', 'Astronaut', Cage Of Infinity', 'Resistance' and 'Orphans', his voice joined with the explosive guitar playing of Stefan Lindholm is a joy to hear.

Whether this departure for (heavier) pastures new will stand Vindictiv in good stead with their old fans will, I feel be subject for fierce debate – but if you like the heavier but still melodic side of metal, then 'Cage Of Infinity' has all the tools at its command to make you a believer.
