It may be a blast from the past in many ways but it is most definitely a welcome one.

If your head or heart still lives with the raw, rock ideals of the 1970s then Scorpion Child's debut album is definitely one for you. Hailing from Austin, Texas, the band is a throwback to the early Led Zeppelin days of big guitar riffs, heavy drums and raw vocals.

Opening track 'Kings Highway' sets the scene nicely with the guitar picking out an open and spacious riff whilst vocalist Aryn Jonathan Black shows his best Robert Plant side with power and range before building into a thunderous chorus, a style reminiscent of Zep's 'Black Dog'. 'Polygon Of Eyes', the first video from the album, gallops along in almost Maiden fashion by comparison but still Black's vocals shine through with another memorable chorus.

Guitarists Chris Cowart and Tom Frank knit together seamlessly providing a classic rock tone. By making the album using analogue recording techniques to create that traditional early 70s sound, it does come across a little 'old school' but the quality of the performances raise this way above being just another dated nostalgia trip. My only minor gripe would be that the album could really to with a bigger and heavier drum sound, to highlight Shawn Alvear's fine work. 'Liquor' and 'In The Arms of Ecstasy' are reminiscent of early Tesla or even back to that very first self titled Rush album. 'Antioch' is the laid back ballad whilst the best is possibly left until last with 'Red Blood (The River Flows)', starting with single acoustic guitar and haunting vocals before building in epic style with power and pace and some searing guitar soloing.

Scorpion Child may well be borrowing from a revered past, but they have more than enough of their own modern day qualities to make this album stand out in its own right. It may be a blast from the past in many ways but it is most definitely a welcome one.
