No-one will be left feeling blue after listening to this superb addition to the Robin Beck legacy

Something old, something new, something borrowed, something blue. That age old wedding tradition could very well relate to Robin Beck’s wonderful new album, ‘Underneath’.

The something old would be the anthemic Glen Burtnick track ‘Follow You’, a song with which Robin surprised many people as her final encore at Firefest last year, and here finishes the album is spectacular style. A song held dear to Ms. Beck for many years, she simply nails it with passion and power. The something new would be several songs that deviate from the normal Robin Beck style, evoking pleasing comparisons with P!NK with their feisty angst and lyrical content. ‘Catfight’ and ‘Check Your Attitude’ in particular scream P!NK while ‘Sprain’ successfully melds the classic Robin Beck style on the chorus with a more experimental sound elsewhere. Something borrowed would be the wonderful Fiona song ‘Ain’t That Just Like Love’ from her excellent ‘Squeeze’ album, on which Robin more than does justice here. Elsewhere, opener ‘Wrecking Ball’ is one hell of a calling card. Modern touches here and there on the musical backing, but really, this is just one monster of a massive melodic hard rock song.

As is usually the case on Robin Beck albums, the ballads are simply superlative. Title track ‘Underneath’ bleeds emotion with a lyrical content I’m sure many of us could relate to. ‘I Swear the Nights’ is another massive hit in the waiting, taken from the same song-writing book as Heart’s ‘Alone’ and coming on just as huge.

Ably back by husband James Christian on bass, guitar and backing vox, and fellow House of Lords bud BJ Zampa on drums and good friend Tommy Denander on guitar, the quality of musicianship on display cannot be faulted, and though Robin only has co-writes on two of the songs on this latest CD, the album is possibly a more complete release than any of her previous efforts, with variety certainly being the spice of life in this instance. Oh, and the something blue? That would be the stunning artwork, created by Richard Jones, that begs to be blown up large and plastered on walls the world over!

Definitely no-one will be left feeling blue after listening to this superb addition to the Robin Beck legacy.
