This particular bunch of 21st century metal bandits deserve to be taken deadly seriously.

Characterised by a surfeit of gut wrenching riffs, a clutch of frenetic solos and the kind of snarling vocals not normally associated with the fairer sex (at least not this side of Benedictum at any rate), Finland's Battle Beast exploded onto the world stage early last year with the international release of their debut 'Steel'. Pitched somewhere between Accept, Manowar, Running Wild and HammerFall, their firebrand take on traditional heavy metal values was certainly caustic, yet at the same time surprisingly tuneful and dare I say memorable. The band's choice of name and clichéd album artwork may have initially screamed 'hackneyed old tosh' at you from every available orifice, but to the surprise of many (myself included I have to say) the musical content proved to be anything but.

Having parted ways with singer Nitte Vänskä in September of last year you could have forgiven the band for calling a bit of a timeout to take stock, but no, Battle Beast are made of sterner stuff! With nary a pause for breath they recruited Noora Louhimo in double quick time and set about writing and recording the songs that would ultimately make up the backbone of eponymous sophomore set 'Battle Beast'. Now as Nitte was a firm favourite with the fans she was always gonna leave some pretty big stiletto's to fill, but with a voice like Doro meets Rob Halford after an evening drinking battery acid (I'm kidding!) Noora makes a pretty strong fist of it. What's more, some of the rough edges which characterised the debut have been smoothed off (albeit only slightly), and when this is allied to a set of songs with a decidedly more post modernistic mainstream slant, I can only see their appeal broadening yet further.

Ok, I'm sure that some metal purists will decry them for selling out, but just because they've introduced more melody, mood changes and melodrama into their usual maelstrom of rampaging rifferama, I don't see why the more level headed amongst us shouldn't enjoy 'Battle Beast' for what it is. Indeed, as a champion of all things honed and finessed, tracks like 'Golden Age/Kingdom', 'Machine Revolution', 'Out Of Control' and 'Necromancer' are most definitely a step in the right direction.

Forget the cartoon image of the name and artwork, like fellow countrymen Lordi this particular bunch of 21st century metal bandits deserve to be taken deadly seriously.
