A superb album.

Ghosthill is a Russian female fronted band that incorporates many different elements of metal into their sound. Formed in 2009, they released debut 'Embrace Of A Chasm' the next year. This is their sophomore effort...

'Imagination' fires out the blocks with 'My Garden Of Seasons'; the guitar rumbles along until the chorus explodes like the jack hammer with a catchy vocal line. If you want pace and ferocity 'Pandora' and 'Beneath The Sky' are two songs that rocket along at chain gun tempo with lots of frenzied guitar work and synth. 'Pandora' has a rollicking good riff whilst 'Beneath' has one of the best choruses on the release. Another corker of a progression, albeit at a slower tempo, can be found stomping its way through 'Black Orchid'. Two songs mid record show very differing sides of the band. The first is the lone ballad 'Sometimes In My Heart' which is a mellow and emotional duet featuring Ivan Efimov. By contrast there is a real nightclub anthem feel to 'It Can't Rain All The Time'; the trance-like keys adds a whole new flavour to the charging riff. This is an exceedingly likable, upbeat and positive song that proves metal and dance can mix. But as much as I enjoyed '...Rain...', my favourite is the title track where the verse has a beautiful cascading riff that guides the listener to another of the best and most bombastic choruses on the album.

To me this is a tremendous and highly individual album. I really like it but will it appeal to others? I honestly have no idea...! This is a nine track journey through a mixture of very differing influences not just from metal but from wider music as well. The best comparison I can offer is to blend Kamelot, Rammstein and Amaranthe together and you might have something that vaguely resembles this kitchen sink approximation. Margarita Vasilevskaya is one hell of a singer in the power house mode; she gives it serious attitude and guts with ease but can still offer a delicate edge when required. Axe men Val Metal and Nikita Degtyarev have created something very unusual musically, the guitars have real intensity and rage but they manage to keep a melodic edge that hides some of the savagery.

If you have an eclectic taste or a penchant for fast paced metal with something extra, I urge you to check this out. As suggested, it won't satisfy everyone's palate but I think this is a superb album and it's certainly flying high for me.

From the moments the keyboards heard during the intro of the opening track, "My Gardens of Seasons," reach the ear drums of the unsuspecting listener, one knows instantaneously they are about to reach metal heaven. The heavy melodic guitars, the superb bass lines and the frenzied pace of the drums all heard during the opening song are all perfectly done. From there things only improve with the ebb and flow of the mesmerizing "Black Orchid, " the pompous, machine gun drumming of "It Can't Rain All the Time," the delicious loud keyboards of "Beneath the Sky," and the larger than life closing track "Flying Through Imagination" is a killer way to close this great release.

By way of comparrison to their 2010 Embrace of a Chasm the sound on Flying Through Imagination is fuller, louder and more defined. A great job of mixing was done, and it shows in droves. Fans of Delain and Within Temptation need to reach for the latest by Ghosthill. For this is one great metal CD.
