I’ve been privileged to hear a lot of fantastic albums this year and ‘IV: Stigmata’ is right up there with the best of them.

Pitch Black Records have a number of bands on their roster, that shall we say are at the louder end of the heavy metal spectrum. That being so, many readers of this melodic rock magazine may not (ever) listen to anything that is released on that label.

I urge you however to put whatever reservations you have to one side because Cypriot band Arrayan Path have with ‘IV: Stigmata’ (a concept based around the books of the Old Testament) recorded one of the finest melodic power metal albums that I have ever heard! How can I be sure of such a bold statement you ask? Well part of the answer is that, sometimes we writers scratch our heads and wonder as to who picks the track sequences for albums because they usually leave the best and most obvious opening track until half way through the album (which never makes any sense). AP help to disprove my point by starting the album with what is for me, one of the best lead off tracks recorded this or for that matter any year: ‘Clepsydra’ (which means hourglass); the track is simply melodic power metal heaven. The guitars, keyboards, drums, bass, vocals and orchestration combine to create a truly superb metal song, a metal song that has more melodies per square inch than your average AOR act could ever muster. Don’t worry though that with such a blistering start AP will not be able to keep the quality going because as ‘The Bible Bleeds’, ‘Midnight And The First-Born Massacre’, ‘Judas Iscariot’ with it’s fabulous chorus, ‘Stigmata’, ‘Cursed Canaan’, ‘Pharaoh’s Wish’, ‘Harbingers of Death’, ‘Disguising Your Soul’ and ‘The Storyteller’ play, you realize that your listening to a very, very special metal album indeed.

In summation I have to say that Arrayan Path are heavy, and Arrayan Path are metal but they also are a band who know how to write songs, full of killer melodies, powerful harmonies and stellar musicianship. I’ve been privileged to hear a lot of fantastic albums this year and ‘IV: Stigmata’ is right up there with the best of them.

I agree, this is one hell of an album. with a mix of the heavy keyboards of Keldian, the melodic, soaring style of Kamelot, and the power metal of Primal Fear or Firewind, Arrayan Path have released their best release yet. If someone thinks Ira Imperium was something, latch on to this one, and brace yourself, for this is one of 2013's best releases yet.
