A little prog metal monster.

Label supreme Khalil Turk says in praise of this new band on his Escape Music label, “One of the best progressive melodic metal bands I have heard in years, I absolutely love this band, and I have not stopped playing this album!!” And as this man, along with partner Barrie Kirtley, has been responsible for many great CDs over the years, we know we can take what he says as read.

Until Rain hail from Greece and began life in 2004, and ‘Anthem To Creation’ is their second full release. The band are part of that ever growing selection of young progressive metal acts that are popping up with alarming regularity these days, to provide us with superb melodic prog metal albums. Think of a group who are right on the cusp of emulating such great acts as Circus Maximus, Evergrey, Seventh Wonder and Vanden Plas and you won’t be far off the mark as to what Until Rain and their music are all about.

The eleven tracks that make up ‘Anthem To Creation’ range from the complex ‘Think Again’ and ‘Brain Death’ to the bombastic ‘Living Hell’ to the highly melodic ‘My Own Blood’, but it’s when the band go all epic on us that their true strength is revealed. ‘Empty Helmet’ is ten minutes plus of intricate time changes, spiralling guitars and emotion filled vocals, while title track ‘Anthem To Creation’ is more than eighteen minutes of prog metal perfection, with an underlying melodic arrangement that entwines itself deeply throughout the song and it is the foundation on which the whole track is built. Once again the vocals of Yannis Papadopoulos and the guitars of Theodore Amaxopoulos combine to drive this complicated yet rewarding song to its powerful conclusion. Finally we have almost ten minutes of ‘Marionettes’; the song is filled wall to wall with the dynamic keyboard runs of Lefteris Germenlis, and at times it borders on 70’s pomp rock but it also boasts one of the best choruses of the year, annoyingly catchy it sticks with you long after the CD has finished spinning.

Escape have a little prog metal monster on their hands and if Until Rain can continue to write and perform as they have done on ‘ATC’, then their future could be a very bright one indeed.
