A tasty morsel, and one that should satisfy the hunger of anyone with a penchant for quality power metal.

This new power metal sextet is actually not as “new” as might at first be assumed, as four members of the band (Daniel Myhr, Daniel Mullback, Oskar Montelius and Rikard Sundén) should be familiar to some readers as having formerly been a part of Sabaton up to and including the recording of their album ‘Carolus Rex’. They required only a singer and a bass player to re-ignite their musical careers and these positions have been admirably filled by Nils Patrik Johansson (Wuthering Heights, Astral Doors, Lion’s Share) and Stefan “Pizza” Eriksson, apparently a former Sabaton backline technician.

‘The Killer Angels’ is the band’s debut offering, and it’s rather a tasty morsel, and one that should satisfy the hunger of anyone with a penchant for quality power metal, played with feeling and panache, and featuring well-written songs with the emphasis on melody and memorability. ‘King Of The Sun’ immediately brings these points home and even starts with something that you may find remarkably redolent of Dio before changing pace and turning into a snarling monster of a track complete with impressive choral backing vocals – these are another impressive feature of this release.‘First To Fight’ picks up the pace while the magnificent ‘St Patrick’s Day’ reels in a Celtic feel quite dramatically, and those glorious choral backing vocals again excel. ‘Rome Is Falling’ is another triumphant song, and was well chosen as the band’s debut single last year. ‘Sons Of Avalon’ is another belter, and by now when listening to this album you will surely notice how one is drawn into singing along with the choruses. They really are infectious! ‘I Rule The Universe’ is quite majestic in approach, dramatic and bold and with another great chorus.

‘Lucifer’s Court’ is a speedy number after a captivating intro, while the balance between guitars and keys on the dramatic ‘Brother Judas’ is just perfection. ‘My Own Worse Enemy’ is another of the perfectly executed and hugely enjoyable high tempo numbers, but again the band recognises the value of mixing things up following it with the sombre story of ‘Gettysburg’, introduced by a rather mournful guitar passage. The mood and tempo rises one final time with album closer ‘March Across The Belts’ and there’s another of those wonderful choruses with which to sing (or at least hum) along!

This is an auspicious start for Civil War. They have taken the Sabaton template, tweaked it and added some impressive ingredients of their own, not least of which are the excellent vocals of Johansson, which are quite different from Sabaton’s Joakim Brodén. ‘The Killer Angels’ comes with an unreserved purchase recommendation if you like this sort of thing.
