Edenbridge have delivered a stunning masterstroke.

Edenbridge are known for using real orchestras and things are no different this time, enlisting the help of the Klangvereinigung Orchestra Of Vienna. Sometimes it’s difficult to tell if a real one has been used but on ‘The Bonding’ there’s absolutely no doubt. The arrangements bring a sense of passion to the slower songs whilst on the more furious entries it adds to the maelstrom.

Four of the songs could be described as pedestrian in pace and ballad like. ‘Star-Crossed Dreamer’ opts for piano and acoustic guitar with some wind instruments before the electrics arrive with a solo that makes the hairs on your neck stand. ‘Into The Sea Of Souls’ has a dreamy air that feels like calmly floating in a boat; the rhythm softly beats like waves lapping and the guitar chimes like the breeze. The chorus arrives like a tidal wave with a luscious vocal harmony and another shiver-inducing solo. There is a soundtrack feel to ‘Far Out Of Reach’, especially in the choruses that are full of grandeur; in places it even reminded me of ‘The Abyss’. The emotional charged ‘Death Is Not The End’ has tear inducing lyrics already but the wind and strings just add another moving layer. Flip the coin over and you’ll find as much gusto as feeling. The opener ‘Mystic River’ is a ripper with a bounding riff, plenty of double drum outbursts and lots of striking strings adding urgency that all runs into a rather catchy chorus. The bass fuels ‘Alight A New Tomorrow’ which is more of a straight forward metal track with another really infectious chorus. Further up the scale the frenetic double drumming and changeable guitar work helps ‘Shadows In My Memory’ sit at the top of the albums heaviness spectrum. But all these pale in comparison to the fifteen minute operatic behemoth that is the title track. It’s a multi-faceted duet between Sabine Edelsbacher and Erik Martensson, (Wet, Eclipse). There are gothic chanting choirs, massive arrangements and lots of classical flair surrounding the intense axe work. This Symphonic diamond floats easily from one section to another, regardless of consistency, like a finely planned meal as does the whole album.

Edenbridge have announced their return by dropping the equivalent of a musical atomic bomb. This beautiful album is pure Symphonic Metal with all the epic grandeur that a real orchestra provides. When compared to the other outstanding 2013 releases, this phenomenal record has all the makings of an album of the year! Edelsbacher has always been an excellent vocalist but here she sounds even more glorious than before, whilst Lanvall on guitars/keys has excelled himself. The fret work and progressions shine throughout, and the keys and arrangements/orchestrations just bind the whole thing together to create a magnificent musical experience.

Put simply Edenbridge have delivered a stunning masterstroke and this musical extravaganza is a potential must own for all Symphonic fans.
