To suggest this collection of songs is impressive would be an understatement.

With a career that's included stints with Procol Harum and Bryan Ferry, as well as releasing a seminal solo record in the shape of 'Bridge Of Sighs' in 1974, Robin Trower has been one of the UK's most respected song writers and guitarists for nigh on four and a half decades. So when a musician of that calibre decides to record a selection of tracks that have inspired him over the years and then augment them with some sympathetically re-crafted originals from his own catalogue, you know the results will be something rather special. So instead of offering up straight re-workings of 'Hound Dog', 'Little Red Rooster' or 'That's Alright Mama', Trower has painstakingly rearranged these tracks into the style of considered blues standards. The results are startlingly interesting and while there's no doubt they will pass by those not intrigued by the charms of blues, for those who can appreciate themes that gently swoop and dive, while still bursting with a determined energy, there's plenty to enthral.

Vocally Trower is on top form, using his authentic tones to bounce off the voice of bassist Richard Watts with electric results, the pair using their vast experience to make these songs sound every bit as lived in and loved as they obviously are. Yes the track listing may read like a generic jukebox of blues and early rock, but to his credit Trower has worked tirelessly to make these versions vibrant and different, allowing 'The Thrill Is Gone' or 'Shape Of Things To Come' to sound every bit as vital and worthy as the versions that have been known or loved for many years.

Less rocking than Trower has long been known for' 'Roots And Branches' reveals the blues heart that has always been at the centre or his work. To suggest this collection of songs is impressive would be an understatement.
