A very enjoyable listen.

Widely considered to be one of Australia’s most significant bands, Little River Band have amassed worldwide sales in excess of thirty million, with the U.S.A. in particular taking the band to their hearts. Their song ‘Reminiscing’ has had over 5 million airplays on American Radio, and also featured in scenes in the Will Ferrell / Mark Wahlberg movie ‘The Other Guys’.

The LRB history goes back to their formation in the early Seventies, with a self-titled debut album appearing in 1975. There has been an abundance of line-up changes throughout the bands career, and has included at various times bassist Beeb Birtles from Zoot (the band that launched the career of Rick Springfield), Peter Beckett of Player, and ‘You’re The Voice’ crooner John Farnham. However, due to the chequered past, the current line-up does not actually feature any of the original members, with bassist/vocalist Wayne Nelson the longest surviving member (since 1980), and the band’s name is actually owned by guitarist Stephen Housden, who only joined the ranks in 1981, and officially left in 2006! (Though he does contribute some additional guitar parts to this particular release.) Whether that is right or wrong is down to your own personal opinion, the main thing that matters to me is the music…

For the uninitiated, Little River band’s sound deftly blends A.O.R., Country, Westcoast and Blues, but somehow manages to avoid straying too far into any one particular genre and thus avoids categorization. It’s definitely at the lighter end of what we cover in Fireworks, and tempo-wise rarely rises above a canter. But as you would expect from this type of music, the performances are first-class, in particular the short but tasteful guitar solos, and classy vocal harmonies.

Indeed, ‘The Lost And The Lonely’ opens the album with one of those well-arranged vocal parts that brings to mind The Eagles, though the song itself has more of a REO Speedwagon-meets-Chicago vibe. It’s actually ‘Way Too Good’ that veers closest to The Eagles, highly reminiscent of the contributions of Joe Walsh. The Country feel of ‘Forever You, Forever Me’ and the title-track are other highlights, along with the blues-tinged ‘You Dream, I’ll Drive’, the darker-sounding ‘Where Do I Run’ and ‘Who Speaks For Me’, the silky smooth ‘Someone’ with it’s classy saxophone parts, while the closing ballad ‘Love Is’ could quite easily become a huge hit for one of Nashville’s leading luminaries.

Not what you would usually expect to see on Frontiers’ roster, but nevertheless a very enjoyable listen.
