Degreed do belong. In several places.

"Blessed is he who expects nothing, for he shall never be disappointed". Alexander Pope.

Stockholm somethings Degreed have the look and aura of one of those quiet/loud aimlessly riffing bands. They tell us that they don't belong, like so many daddy's trust fund - no one understands me – and I'm like and he was like - young bands. They've produced a debut which has garnered some interest and they are on a label which might show a different style.

And Degreed set about confounding any expectation you have. Or I had, more likely. This is a combination of whining foolishness, meaty Metaldom and shimmering AOR. It's a bit of a banquet, but it could induce indigestion. They begin with urgency, some machine gun riffing and wholly expected choral shouts, some ghostly synths and melody to spare, but by the time 'What If' arrives, calmness takes over and pianos tinkle winsomely, until a spacey synth bursts open. They also open those doors to let the sun in on 'Inside Of Me' with a very easy, fluffy chorus, big pumping bass and parping synths, commercial and confounding. And this is next door to 'Follow Her Home' (errmmm..), which rises on a refrain that the Goo Goo Dolls would recognise, chart ready and cheeks shining. And 'Here I Am' attempts to meld all of the influences; it's a bit of a marmite trifle, but Rick Springfield perkiness, an overwrought Modern Metal middle and even a Toto one-note piano line and bubbly synthwork just hold together to produce something with dramatic beauty.

Some of this fails to rattle any cages, but mostly it shows an interest in expanding a musical palette which is laudable and not laughable. Degreed do belong. In several places.
