Wonderful stuff.

From my review in Issue 58* you'll know that I had the privilege of being in the audience the evening this album/DVD was recorded; for me it was a magical gig and ever since I've hoped the recordings would reflect that. I'm pleased to report that both audio and visuals live up to expectations.

I'm no lover of DVDs where they cut between shots rapidly or use effects; other than a bit of split screen work and some embarrassing crowd shots I'm delighted that here the shots linger appropriately and it's a straight-forward and simple representation of a truly great show. Mentioning the crowd, it's incredible how many people can be seen making their way to their seats during the opening strains of 'Watcher of the Skies'; reinforcing my view there's a lack of respect from many concert-goers these days. At least you can't hear them chatting, as you could on the night in question.

Every moment of the gig is captured across the three CDs and two DVDs (the latter being bonus interviews with the band and special guests). I noticed a couple of gaffs on the evening; these have been 'fixed', not unreasonably. The sheer enjoyment of the band is even more apparent on film and Lee Pomeroy comes across like a kid in a Sweet Shop such is his evident pleasure at playing this material. The band is splendid throughout with the under-rated Gary O'Toole being a star on both drums and vocals. His backing vocal capabilities are often hidden by his drums but are more obvious on film. Nad Sylvan is the perfect choice for the majority of the lead vocals and the various guest performers (Nik Kershaw, John Wetton, Jaco Jaczyck, Amanda Lehmann) contribute wonderful renditions of the Genesis classics.

The CDs omit much of the between song banter, which is a shame, so you miss Hackett inviting the crowd to join in with 'Dancing With the Moonlit Knight' which they do with great pleasure.

My mate Dave is far more technical about his music than I, so he was purring with delight when Hackett played the solo in 'Firth of Fifth' as he did on the iconic 'Seconds Out'. This is just one highlight from well over two hours of highlights.

Wonderful stuff; those with Genesis withdrawal could do far worse than checking this out.
