Jeff Scott Soto / Jorge Salan Band / Danger Angels - Camden Underworld, London (UK) - 6th April 2013

Jeff Scott Soto is a favourite with us at FWHQ. I was lucky enough to see JSS at The Gods in 2003 so I was excited to see him again. Opening tonight were Danger Angels from Greece with Soto's backing band performing a solo set in between.

The catchy 'One Hit In The Night' was the Greek Rockers opening choice and I liked what I heard straight away; the pounding rhythm, thick guitar and slick synth meshed well. There was a nice revolving riff to 'Road Kill', which preceded the interestingly titled 'Dead By Xmas'. The chorus saw heads rocking away and this seemed to go down rather well. DA took the pace down with 'Falling' before one of their best songs in 'When I'm Gone'. It was fuelled by some effective echoed guitar and keys work with vocals that just hung in the air. There was time for 'Don't Die Young' and 'Not An Angel' before their closer 'I'm Not Here'. It had quite a bounce to it and all four players were across front as the guitar kicked for home.

Jorge Salan is the guitarist for JSS and on this tour he and the others also took centre stage. Sadly he didn't say much explaining that his English wasn't the best so I didn't get many song titles. The first track was a funky number with some exquisite fret work whilst the second also contained another ripping solo. Their third song was one of their best with a real retro rock feel to it due to the Thin Lizzy like guitar wails. There was a mellow intro before Salan fired up the crowd with his own rendition of Jovi's 'Lay Your Hands On Me'. There was one more unknown track before a classic rock composition that saw Salan up on the amp shredding away. Their set closed out with another cover in 'Over The Hills And Far Away' and although it got a less fevered response than I expected, it still went down a treat. There was quite a cheer as the band left the stage for a break.

Salan and the guys soon returned to the stage and fired straight into 'Take Me Down'. Within moments JSS bounced out looking every inch the cool rock star and live wire that I remember. This liveliness continued into '21st Century' and 'Damage Control' as Soto was juggling the mic around and draping himself over the other musicians. After 'One Love' he continued the varied set including 'Look Inside Your Heart', 'Soul Devine' and 'Tears That I Cry'. He was making utmost use of the small stage dancing and leaping around with the other members. Soto calmed things with 'Broken Man' before the tempo returned for 'Afraid To Die'. The band were left solo again for 'Risk' before Soto returned for a medley of tracks including 'Day By Day', 'Dangerous' and 'Mysterious'. I was thrilled to see him give 'Killer' and 'Crazy' an airing as well. The Talisman theme continued with 'I'll Be Waiting' before Soto powered into a cover of Ozzy Osbourne's 'Shot In The Dark'. Afterwards he announced it was Salan's birthday and he joined Soto vocally for 'Livin The Life'. There wasn't much of an encore and they were soon back playing with 'Give A Little More'. By this point Soto was sat on the amps against the back wall looking supremely relaxed. There was another medley which concluded with 'We Will Rock You' and a loud crowd response. Soto retorted with mock exasperation that his song was the only one that the crowd 'didn't fucking sing along to'. He had one more surprise and introduced reality singer Nathan James. The pair of them roared their way through 'Stand Up' before they all took a well deserved bow before exiting.

All I can say is if anyone didn't have a good time tonight, I have no idea why. This evening was full of quality rock n' roll featuring some fine guitar work and vocal performances. I didn't know anything about Danger Angels but their keyboard infused rock was highly entertaining. Salan's band was equally enjoyable with some excellent guitar shredding but the undisputed star of tonight was the main man Soto. He was full of energy and demonstrated exactly why he is so highly regarded as a showman.
