Artist

Joe Satriani - Indigo O2, London (UK) - 18th June 2013

After the release of his latest work of art, 'Unstoppable Momentum', Satriani, faithful to his loyal UK fan base, returns to perform not only once but twice in the capital. The venue chosen for his second night in London was the Indigo 02, which has become my favourite gig space due to its good quality sound, purpose-built layout and modern yet cosy design.

As one of the top players in the game, Steve Vai's erstwhile teacher has always surrounded himself with musicians of outstanding qualities, but this time around he exceeded expectations with none other than Mike Kenneally (ex-Zappa) on guitars and keyboards, Bryan Beller (The Aristocrats, Steve Vai) on bass and Marco Minnemann (The Aristocrats, Paul Gilbert) on drums. The inimitable yet much imitated guitarist commenced the evening proceedings with 'Cool #9', a song well known from his 1995 self-titled album, but the rest of the show was heavily based upon his repertoire from the fabulous 'Unstoppable Momentum', playing 10 out of its 11 tracks, including the phenomenal 'Unstoppable Momentum', 'Weight Of The World', 'Door Into Summer', 'Lies and Truths', 'Shine On' and 'Celebration', transporting the audience to a different world, especially when aided by the video footage of the 'whilst-driving a car' scenery.

Naturally, the classics from his early career couldn't have been left out and he indulged the audience with 'Ice 9' from his 1987 album 'Surfing With The Alien', 'Flying In A Blue Dream' from the 1989 album of the same name, and 'Crying' from 1992's 'The Extremist', although the climax of his classics came with 'Always With Me Always With You' and his trademark 'Surfing With The Alien'. The latter two closed the set before the band reappeared on stage for three encores: 'Crowd Chant', 'Summer Song' and the low tempo 'Rubina' (which, despite it being a goose-bumping track, wouldn't necessarily have been my choice to end this wonderful evening).

All in all, this proved to be an out of this world experience that wasn't tarnished by vocal songs, making it a full instrumental heavenly set led by one of the icons of the guitar world with three music beasts. Marco's drumming and Brian's bass lines form an unbelievable base for Satriani's stellar playing (hence, it was no wonder that they joined forces with the unbeatable Guthrie Govan – who also attended to see the show – in The Aristocrats) and all decorated with the class and outstanding guitar and keyboards of Kenneally.

The sound was spectacular, the songs wisely cherry-picked, and the feel Satriani transmitted just sensational. Almost two hours of a jaw dropping 'momentum'.
