Bon Jovi - Hyde Park, London (UK) - 5th July 2013

A sunny and warm early evening welcomed a fabulous three-hour-long performance in a beautiful open-air central London setting by one of the most successful and exciting rock bands in the whole wide world. As the Friday headliners of the British Summer Time Festival, Bon Jovi set foot on a state-of-the-art stage cleverly decorated with fake trees and, surprisingly, started with not one of their many songs from their 12 studio albums, but with Status Quo's 'Rockin' All Over The World'. From then on the response of the tens of thousands of fans gathered there gave a clear indication of the adoration we all feel for the New Jerseyans.

That cover gave way to a best-of set-list that encompassed a fair mix of their older and most recent material. Hence, early classics such as 'You Give Love A Bad Name', 'Raise Your Hands' and 'Bad Medicine' (incorporating a little medley including Roy Orbison's 'Pretty Woman'), were combined with later anthems such as 'Keep The Faith', 'I'll Sleep When I'm Dead', 'Someday I'll Be Saturday Night' and 'In These Arms', newer favourites such as 'It's My Life' and 'Have A Nice Day', and three tracks from their latest release: 'That's What The Water Made Me', 'Because We Can' and the title track 'What About Now'.

Sadly, there was no mention about the departure in April of guitarist Richie Sambora, who we missed not only as the lead guitarist, but also as a second singer. Saying this, his replacement, Theofilos 'Phil X' Xenidis, did a great job on the instrument, particularly during the solos on encores 'Dry County' and 'Always'. The rest of the band remained unchanged, with Tico Torres on drums, David Bryan on keyboards, long-standing extras Hugh MacDonald on bass and Robby Bandiera on rhythm guitar, and, naturally, the star of all stars Mr Jon Bon Jovi. Sporting a red waistcoat to be seen from the depths of Hyde Park, the frontman proved he still has the looks, he still has the stage presence and most importantly he still has the voice and the power to enchant his audience.

In Bon Jovi fashion, the encores lasted for over an hour, making the good times last longer, and doing something different, he initiated the hit single 'Livin' On A Prayer' acoustically before the rest of the band joined him on stage. The heartfelt 'Blood On Blood' marked the end of a glorious evening and the hordes of fans left happy having in their minds they jammed with Bon Jovi, as Jon had stated earlier. The volcanic power that is Bon Jovi remains untouchable.
