An enjoyable enough piece of fluff but really is nothing more substantial than that.

Hmm interesting concept this one particularly if you look at the full title of the book, which reads 'If You Like Metallica...Here Are Over 200 Bands, Cds, Movies And Other Oddities You Will Love'. Your enjoyment of the book therefore, in my view anyway, hinges on how high a regard you hold for Metallica, their music and their influence on the rock and metal scene over the past thirty years or so.

The author, a self confessed punk freak, first discovered Metallica through an encounter with an attractive female punk whom he spotted in Washington Square Park in Brooklyn, New York in full punk attire but wearing a 'Ride The Lightning' T-shirt. This inspired him to head straight for the nearest record store where he purchased 'Master Of Puppets', so starting his love affair with Metallica and metal music in all its various forms that endures to this day.

The book devotes a chapter each to the origins of metal, NWOBHM and punk and how the various artists mentioned came to influence the band. This is followed by subsequent chapters on thrash, alternative and stoner/doom metal, where McPadden waxes lyrical on how Metallica have either appreciated or directly influenced the bands he mentions. To give credit where credit is due his chapters on NWOBHM, thrash and punk are reasonably authoritive but to include bands like Mercyful Fate and Celtic Frost in the NWOBHM section of the book shows that Mike needs to get a map of Europe out and see if he can find Denmark and Switzerland. The clue's in the title Mr McPadden, New Wave Of British Heavy Metal! He is also inclined to try and be clever by using phrases like "arising from the realms of bagpipes, haggis and Braveheart" – which he uses to introduce Scottish prog metal band Holocaust – which are neither clever nor funny just rather infantile to be honest. Mind you bearing in mind that McPadden is the head writer at MrSkin.com, a website providing an A-Z guide to finding your favourite actresses naked – and therefore most likely to appeal to pubescent teenage boys – his writing style begins to make perfect sense.

Most damning of all however is his insistence at trying to make links to Metallica with virtually every band that he mentions. They range from the valid – their songs appeared on the 'Garage Inc' covers album for example – to the downright tenuous. Ever heard of a folk/prog outfit called Coven? No I didn't think so. Their claim to Metallica-lore is their 1971 hit single 'One Tin Soldier' that was used as the theme to the film 'Billy Jack'. The author enthuses that Billy Jack, a war hero who hated war, could have been the subject of one of Metallica's numerous anti-war anthems. Well if you say so Mike! Oh and sweeping statements like 'Metallica created alternative metal' are downright laughable.

All in all though, this is an enjoyable enough piece of fluff but really is nothing more substantial than that.
