This may not be the album to ignite Mothers Whiskey, but it sure is an extremely promising warm up.

Mothers Whiskey is the latest project from Portland's Shane Barbeau and Greg Powers (drums and lead vocals/guitar). Together with friends Jordon Groleau on guitar and Brandon Peterson on bass guitar, their influences are of the old ways in their writing, folklore, trees, fire and the moon.

Big slabs of guitar chords drive 'Cloaks And Cauldrons', and though the band may not be poets, the message is hammered down in the gutsy and raw vocal delivery. 'Scorpion Moon Burn' is heavy on the vibes and thudding bass guitar, the like of which you won't have heard since Cathedral reintroduced us to the stoner genre.

Having only seven songs doesn't give you time to lose interest, though the rather banal 'Ad Astra' does at times sound like the band are going to completely fall apart, such is the abysmal time keeping! Fortunately 'Feel The Wrath' pulls it together in a soup of meaty riffs and atmospheric distortion, with the closest influences being Electric Wizard and Reverend Bizarre, the song building into dizzy chaos, before slipping back into the beat of a decaying heartbeat. The ghost of Jim Morrison can be heard in the Smokey vocal intro to 'Blessed Boar'. Singer Greg Powers' bloody roar awakes the song from its slumber, its chest beating in a style not heard since Zakk Wylde's Black Label Society. The instrumental 'The Passage' contains sludgy riffs, that after a while become quite hypnotic - think the Hawkind during their 'In Search Of Space' era.

Overall, this may not be the album to ignite Mothers Whiskey, but it sure is an extremely promising warm up.
