Title

They're back and as irrepressible as ever: viva Running Wild!

Veteran German metal warriors as intrinsic to their domestic scene as (say) Saxon are to ours, Hamburg vagabonds Running Wild have been defiantly flying the pirate flag since the late 70s – their roots go back a couple of years further via weird and wonderful names such as Granite Hearts and Grober Unfug, but I believe the good ship Running Wild first set sail in 1979.

And regardless of trends or fashion faux pas, pretty much ever since they've been bringing their own brand of caustic rifferama to the masses. Granted, they may have considered calling it a day for good after the less than well received 'Rogues En Vogue' album, but after a little downtime to recharge the batteries they're back and as irrepressible as ever. Continuing to re-embrace their swashbuckling roots, latest album 'Resilient' once again delivers a snarling, riff strewn metal fest pitched somewhere between Accept and Judas Priest.

As usual, it's adherence to formula and comparatively simplistic fare will, I'm sure, give the minority of naysayers much to crow about, but as always, they're kind of missing the point. Don't get me wrong, I love the progressive complexities of Dream Theater or the lush melodies of Work Of Art as much as the next man, but embracing the well proven principle of variety being the spice of life, every so often you need a goodly dose of old school metal up ya botty to prove you ain't quite over the hill yet (no matter how close you are to the summit!).

And on that basis, that's exactly where Running Wild scores big. It's brash, it's loud and abrasive, and at full volume it'll certainly scare the shit out of next door's cat, but the strafing riffs of tracks such as 'Fireheart', 'Soldiers Of Fortune', 'Down To The Wire' and 'Adventure Highway' are somehow hypnotically addictive. Yet, as much as bludgeon and bluster is the central lynchpin of the Running Wild psyche, they do have a few other tricks up their sleeve. The moody 'Run Riot' for example has a metalized Billy Idol feel to it (being very 'Rebel Yell' at times), whilst album closer 'Bloody Island' is a marauding epic which sees them sail pretty close to 'Powerslave' era Iron Maiden (albeit with a fair dose of Running Wild grit).

The more things change the more (some of them at least) stay the same ... viva Running Wild!
