Rightfully claim a place on the heavy metal landscape.

Harmonious, loud and episodic are all adjectives that come to mind after hearing Crystal Viper's latest heavy metal offering. By way of comparison to 2012s 'Crimen Excepta', heard here is more melodious with heavier hitting drums, luxuriant keyboards, and there truly seems to be a tighter cohesiveness between the band members. The clean vocals of Marta Gabriel mix nicely with the growls coming from a myriad of the metal world's best male vocalists. Of interesting note is the band utilized the screams of some 50 fans from around the world who all answered an ad to send their screams to the band, and if chosen would have the ultimate bragging rights that their screams are heard on the CD and their names would appear as guest vocalists on the liner notes. Something to be proud of for 50 lucky fans indeed.

Incorporating the metal of Huntress, the larger-than-life sounds of the great Battle Beast and the ferociousness of The Birthday Massacre, this Polish quartet have done themselves proud, on this their fifth studio release. Highlights include the thrashing drums of 'Voices In My Head', the lyrics of 'Why Can't You Listen' that tell of a young girl hoping against hope that someone will listen to her pleas for help, the gorgeous acoustic guitars of 'Prophet Of The End', the killer guitar solo of 'You Will Burn, You Will Die', and the deliciously evil 'Mark Of The Horned One'.

It is worth a mention that what works here on 'Possession' is that a tangible story can be felt. Said to be a concept album telling the story of Julia and her many thoughts and questions about herself, told through the power of music, Crystal Viper have played out in front of their fans, for a lack of better words, a novel. Utilizing ebbs and tides in musical sentiments, volume changes, keyboards that swell in pitch, guitars that howl and drums that take the place of a heartbeat, one can feel of Julia's frustrations, her innermost thoughts and wishes to be understood by those around her. Not an easy task to pull off, but Crystal Viper have done it well.

'Possession' is a solid CD, where the songs are clean and each note is clear and the group as a whole comes together to rightfully claim a place on the heavy metal landscape.
