A must have album for anyone who calls themselves a fan of Prog Rock.

‘Firdous’ is one of the names used in the Quran to describe the ‘Highest Paradise’. It is also the name chosen by Mumbai based Prog Rock band Coshish for their debut concept album, and I have to say that this release has just blown me away. The band of Hamza Kazi, Anish Nair, Mangesh Ghandi and Shrikant Sreenivasan have made an album of such beautiful music, sung in their native language of Hindi (which didn’t pose a problem at all for me) that as soon as this amazing album came to an end and stopped turning in the player, it always made me want to hit the play button again straight away so I could relish in its splendour once more. The album tells the tale of a man on a journey to find Nirvana, the music which helps this story along reminded me of Anathema, a lighter Opeth (without the growls), Subsignal and Muse. Though I have to admit that those comparisons should just be used as reference points because what Coshish have recorded on ‘Firdous’ is one of the most enthralling and captivating pieces of music that I have personally ever heard.

Obviously because of the language barrier, I cannot tell you what is being said on ‘Firdous’ but that really, really does not matter! That’s because as you listen to ‘Firdous’, ‘Raastey’, ‘Coshish’, ‘Behti Boondein’, ‘Who Kho Gaye’, ‘Hum Hai Yahin’, ‘Maya’, ‘Rehne Do’, ‘Bhula Do Unhey’ and ‘Mukti’...the music does all the talking that is needed. It is blissful and exciting, dark and light and as it plays it always makes you want to keep listening right up until the final note has faded away.

Many will not want to hear this album because of the fact that it is sung in a different language. I’m afraid that will be their loss because the care that the band have put into everything that encompasses ‘Firdous’ can’t be sneered at, just one look at the packaging for example will prove this to you. The songs, musicianship, production values and everything else are so good, that a different language really shouldn’t come into it. Simply stated ‘Firdous’ is a must have album for anyone who calls themselves a fan of Prog Rock.
