Should be top of your shopping list.

A Gothenburg based quintet put together back in early 2007 by Nightrage singer Jimmie Strimell and former Cipher System guitarist Pontus Hjelm, Dead By April have always been one of those bands whom, whilst on my radar, have never really registered that much in terms of impact. However, in the wake of the mighty Amaranthe – I never really took to Melodic Metal bands who made liberal use of Death Metal vocals seriously until then – my horizons have broadened somewhat and I'm now starting to look at them with a much more objectively critical eye.

Not the most stable of bands, their line-up has seen a steady stream of members come and go over the past few years – indeed, Strimell himself left about a year ago. That said, their musical output has always remained steadily consistent (thanks in no small part to main songwriter Hjelm), and if the idea of a more romantically gothicised version of Amaranthe floats your particular boat, then DBA's upcoming third album 'Let The World Know' is definitely an appropriate place to start.
Taking over from Strimell is Christoffer Andersson (What Tomorrow Brings), his guttural growls and screams offering a stark contrast to the clean, gothically infused vocal style of Zandro Santiago. Described by various sources as Melodic Metal with a mix of Metalcore, Nu Metal and Melodic Death Metal, DBA remain tantalisingly vague when it comes to being pigeonholed, their often brutal riffs and hell spawn growls seemingly diametrically opposed to the lush keyboard orchestration and rich melodies ... yet somehow it works!

Kicking off with a plaintive piano refrain, album opener 'Beautiful Nightmare' quickly morphs into something far more malevolent, yet the hauntingly beautiful chorus indicates a much higher intelligence at work – kind of like the aforementioned Amaranthe. And, having been totally hooked by the ethereal gravitas of their opening salvo, it became inevitable that capitulation to the charms of 'Abnormal', 'Done With Broken Hearts' and 'Peace Of Mind' would be both swift and absolute.

Don't let the ghoulish spectre of Death Metal put you off because Dead By April are very far removed from the likes of Carcass and Obituary ... as I said earlier, if you like Amaranthe for reasons other than the aesthetic charms of Elize Ryd (although to paraphrase the divorce sketch from 'Not The Nine O'Clock News', that's a pretty good reason!), 'Let The World Know' should be top of your shopping list!
