Amazing.

When Australia's Vanishing Point's new album arrived, I popped it in the player and sat back, hoping for another record from this wonderful Prog Metal band that I could gush about to our loyal readers. I can honestly say that VP have come up with an album that has given me the tools to do exactly that. It is a release that always makes my fingers itch to hit the replay button as soon as it has finished spinning. I know it's only January but 'Distant Is The Sun' is one of the most accomplished and entertaining albums of the Prog (Rock) genre that I have encountered in many a moon.

The songs themselves are beautifully written and performed, the production is big and expansive, the cover breathtaking and the sheer joy you get from listening to the music that VP have come up with leaves you feeling happy, excited and always wanting more. The opening salvo of 'King Of Empty Promises', title track 'Distant Is The Sun' and 'When Truth Lies' all strike hard and hit with the force of a battering ram. The stunning arrangements and consummate musicianship only enhances what VP have produced on this album to the nth degree. The band then hits us with a mighty curve ball in the shape of 'Let The River Run' which is Melodic Rock perfection. Ushered in by some stunning harmony vocals, this is a massive ballad that anyone from the AOR community would have killed to have written.

Everything about this song borders on the perfect, the vocals are beautifully constructed to gain the most from their emotional impact, the orchestration adds depths of dark and light that help to elevate this track to another level and finally if that wasn't enough, the stunning guitar work leaves you once again stunned and delighted in equal measure. This is an early contender for track of the year and it will be hard to beat. What then amazes you even more as you continue to listen to 'Distant...' is the fact that VP can keep up this superb quality and musicality all through the next eight tracks. Just listen too 'Denied Deliverance', 'Story Of Misery', 'Pillars Of Sand' and 'As December Fades' and tell me that I'm wrong.

2014 has barely begun and already I have been privileged to listen to a lot of albums that are just so good, that I've been left staggered by each of them. You will hopefully be next and you must (and I do mean MUST) get yourself a copy of 'Distant Is The Sun' because it is amazing.
