Transatlantic - London Forum, 12 March 2014

The word awesome gets thrown about like confetti these days, but I can think of no more fitting adjective for what I and a couple of thousand other punters witnessed at this event. I say event because this was more than just a gig. The near three hours the band was on stage went by in a flash as they played a superb, well balanced selection of tracks from across their catalogue. So immersed in the show was I that I forgot to make any notes so the following are recollections dredged up from my memory as I sat on the train home.

As Transatlantic hit the stage the audience's roar was huge and sounded like a welcome for conquering heroes; this adulation seemingly spurring the band on to even greater heights. Mike Portnoy was like a man possessed behind the drums, living every moment. Watching him playing delicately on the cymbals whilst walking a full lap of his kit, without missing a beat will live with me for a long time as will the normally very reserved Roine Stolt jumping into the photo pit and high-fiving the crowd during the final song, 'Stranger In Your Soul'.

Kudos also goes to Ted Leonard (Spock's Beard/Enchant) for his contribution as replacement for the sick Daniel Gildenlöw. He might be supplementing the band on the road as a multi-instrumentalist but he is no mere side man. A couple of lead vocal spots plus some guitar interplay at the front of the stage indicated that he'd been integrated perfectly; a wise selection for sure.

The band opened with the epic 'Into The Blue' from the latest album and in doing so set the bar really high, but they kept on reaching it. 'My New World' took us back to the debut and maintained the high energy before they took a breather with the restrained but no less special 'Shine'.

A medley from 'The Whirlwind' album went down a storm (pun intended) whilst 'We All Need Some Light' was sublime, a true classic, with the crowd contributing significantly. Encores of 'All Of The Above' and the aforementioned 'Strangers...' were simply the icing on the considerable cake.

The smiling faces of the crowd as they departed said it all, everyone was leaving very happy and having witnessed something remarkable. The question has to be, where are all these people when Neal Morse, The Flower Kings and Spock's Beard play the U.K. when they play music in a similar vein?

Had Transatlantic been around in the original Prog movement they'd have been selling out multiple nights at Earls Court. Let's hope it's not four years until we see them again.
