Ken Karson has crafted an album full of Poppy AOR.

Aided by Rob Mancini (Hotwire/Crush/Scar For Life), singer Ken Karson has crafted an album full of Poppy AOR, which given time proves to be rather seductive. Initially things feel a little too lightweight to really make a lasting impact, however behind some slick moves and a glossy sheen, irresistible hooks begin to glisten temptingly and suddenly you find yourself singing the choruses to 'Watching You Go By' or 'In The Heat Of The Night' when you least expect it.

Karson has an alluringly gruff, yet smooth vocal style, using emotion and passion over sheer power or clarity and in this setting it has to be said it is the correct approach; the piano led 'I Recall' (which appears twice, once as a full blown ballad, once as a piano/vocal track) showcasing this to perfection. Given the right exposure, it is easy to imagine certain Radio2 DJ's getting themselves in a serious lather over either version. Mancini, who has slowly begun building a reputation as a go to producer and songwriter, does the album proud while another guest contributor, John Pratt (Firefly) who offers backing vocals on a couple of tracks, actually gives a strong indicator as to the sound of this album. If you enjoyed his previous solo effort 'Turn The Page', you'll also get a huge kick out of the expert, laid back AOR presented here.

'Angels Or Demons' kicks in with a pulse so similar to the intro to the John Elefante's Kansas track 'Fight Fire With Fire' that on first encounter I presumed the song was a cover version. Quite shockingly, the introductory guitar line from 'Assassing' by Marillion turns you on your head and makes you think you're listening to a different cover altogether. Amazingly it's neither, but the similarities are a little scary, although once the song (and the listener) settles down another cracking, catchy number is revealed and revelled in.

With 'Just In Time' Karson have delivered an album that's going to, in the right way, ruffle the feathers of the AOR crowd. Hopefully it is the first ruffling of many.
