Powerful and well-written.

It certainly doesn't seem like two years since I was reviewing South Wales-based Psycho Kiss' debut album 'Monkeying Around', and that's because it wasn't, having only picked up on the promising female-fronted rockers several months after its release. With the ten track follow-up 'Bloodbath At The Disco' it's immediately apparent that the band have upped their game, with a more consistent set of songs and a much better production hopefully improving their chances of raising their profile.

Like the first album, Psycho Kiss have a pretty wide musical palette, taking classic Hard Rock as a starting point and adding updated instrumental sounds and contemporary arrangements and production to make a CD that should have something for everyone. Generally the album can be divided into two halves, with the first half consisting entirely of heavier material with busy riffs from Paul O'Brien and the fluid rhythms of bassist Marv Medwell and drummer Penfold, with the soaring vocals of Helen Clarke taking them to another level on the likes of the wonderful 'Why Should I Care', the contentious (to some, I guess) 'There Is No God' and the aggressive title track, whilst the otherwise modern-sounding 'Red, White & Gold' has more than a hint of Purple's 'Space Truckin'' in the main riff. To me the latter half is more interesting, with the killer vocal melodies of 'In Your Groove' and moments of real subtlety and originality throughout 'Home' and the vibrant closer 'Breathe Again', with genuine emotion pouring out from Clarke on the lighter 'Beautiful' and the highly melodic 'Warpaint'.

Powerful and well-written, 'Bloodbath At The Disco' is a natural progression for Psycho Kiss and deserves to get them noticed outside of South Wales, aided of course by widespread tour dates in 2014. They have a true star in Clarke and would be a perfect crossover act for any of the UK's main rock festivals. Can you hear me out there?
