Modern in attitude but with a love for Classic Rock.
They might be English but this young band will transport you to the US with their likeable brand of Rock; modern in attitude but with a love for Classic Rock.
Take opener 'I Know' as an example; singer Tom Quick sounds like Green Day's Billie Joe Armstrong tackling a Bon Jovi song. That might sound like a peculiar mix but it works. The Bon Jovi comparison appears again on 'I Want It' with its knowing "Tommy and Gina" line, referencing the characters from Bon Jovi's 'Livin' On A Prayer'. This bass driven song is one the album's highlights.
Soul Asylum comes to mind on 'Can I Find You' in terms of Quick's vocals, the lyrics and the Alt-Pop Rock melody. 'Broken Romance' has a more modern All American Rejects energy and a catchy chorus. There's also Hair Metal raunchiness on the no-messing, tough riffing 'One Night Only' and radio friendly feel good material such as the title track and on the big chorus of the McFly sounding 'Never Again', complete with call and response hooks. That may sound like a clash of too many styles to sound cohesive, but it all hangs together well.
The fact that their most recent single 'Fairytale' doesn't appear until track nine shows that the band has quality songs in depth. Recommendations for the band come from legends Thin Lizzy and...Will Young (but don't let that put you off). It's good blue collar Rock with a Pop sensibility and an infectious energy that indicates a band that could be something special live. Influenced by the past but doing something quite different than what the vast majority of Rock bands are doing these days, The Brink are an interesting home-grown talent that are worth checking out.
