After the second play I completely changed my opinion.

After the first listen I nearly dismissed this as another generic, modern-edged, bandwagon jumping band, but after the second play I completely changed my opinion – it's amazing how a different day brings a new perspective.

Anyone who's familiar with Pavic will know them as a Melodic Rock band featuring well respected guitarist Marco Pavic who enlisted the guest talents of Vitalij Kuprij (keys – Ring Of Fire), Tony Franklin (bass – Blue Murder), Daniel Flores (drums – Mind's Eye) and Kee Marcello (guitars - ex Europe) on his 2005 debut 'Taste Some Liberty'. Marcello returned again for the 2008 follow up 'Unconditioned' where he guested on the melodic 'Just Go On'. After that release, original vocalist and co-writer Chris Catena and drummer Marco Madonia have left being replaced by Grunge loving singer/co-writer Joe Calabro along with technical drummer Antonio Aronne (influenced by Mike Portnoy and Virgil Donati).

What this has done is changed the band's dynamic considerably. Beatles, Led Zepplin and Deep Purple fan Pavic has undoubtedly been influenced by Marcello as he builds his solos with the same tonality on the pentatonic scale. He has even dropped a semi-octave which Marcello has been doing on his solo albums, unlike his work on 'Out Of This World' and particularly 'Prisoners In Paradise' where producer Ron Nevison used a lot of equalizing. Bassist Aleks Ferrara is a Prog Rock aficionado and lists Tony Levin and Sting as influences whilst keyboardist Lorenzo Antonelli cites Keith Emerson and Jordan Rudess; as a result they are all very talented players.

Treading territory normally reserved for the likes of Nickelback, Shinedown and Soundgarden, it's clear Pavic is taking the band in a different direction, but that's not to say he's lost any of his melodic sensibility. The choruses in 'Is War The Answer', 'In Your Eyes' and 'Strong Enough' are melodic enough to keep old fans happy whilst the power ballad 'Song For The Rain' works very well with Pavic playing a very sweet solo.

'Your Own Misery' sees Pavic using pinch harmonics and an array of styles and techniques throughout whilst the modern Nickelback/Shinedown edge keeps it interesting. 'Every Time I Die' has a sub Soundgarden/Alice In Chains vibe with Antonelli adding eclectic keyboard effects whilst Pavic generally blazes away. 'Freefall' is a fast flowing Rocker with insistent riffs and Antonelli's mellifluous keys atop, but the one disappointing part is their cover of Duran Duran's 'Notorious'; it doesn't work for me. Pavic has Andy Taylor's licks down to a 'T', whilst adding a splash of colour, but Calabro's rough vocal interpretation of the lyrics doesn't suit the tempo. '(Reach Up For The) Sunrise' or 'What Happens Tomorrow' would have worked better.
