An excellent album of gloomy and melancholic songs that keep you enthralled from beginning to end.

My initial thought was "oh God, not another Female Fronted Gothic Rock act", because as much as I like these types of bands, and I have many examples in my own record collection, you could say that the genre is getting a little oversaturated at the moment. Thankfully my initial worries about Philadelphia's Tungsten and 'The Reservoir' turned out to be false because instead of the expected Gothic Metal, we find in its place a completely different musical styling. It's one which brings to mind more of a Female Fronted Opeth comparison, circa their 'Still Life' period, than one with the likes of Nightwish, Epica and Edenbridge. Tungsten have at their core a dark heavy brooding and intense musicality, that only helps them keep a strong identity of their own, and in a market overflowing with Female Fronted groups, this can only be a good thing.

First track 'Water From Stone' begins with a reflective intro piece that is soon blown aside by the brooding heavy guitar riffs of Ben Grossberg and Jeff McCall and the raspy vocals of Titi Musick (if that's a made up name drop it, if it's real change it), a Lady who really knows how to belt out a tune with the best of her male counterparts. 'Contamination', 'Night Wanders By', 'El Dofor' and 'Atmos (Masto) Stoma' continue this heavy yet very atmospheric trend, with the band weaving cold ethereal landscapes of music, drawing you ever deeper into the world of Tungsten. Their magnum opus however is the album's title cut 'The Reservoir', where once again the powerful guitar riffs and pounding bass lines grab you and try you pull you down into the darkness that Tungsten have created. Musick also displays on this track, why she could be the key to this band going places, as her commanding vocals and sinister delivery weave their way through this exciting song.

Tungsten have come up with a very interesting album that is equal parts Prog, Heavy Metal and Gothic Rock, which on the first few listens could be a little confusing. Stick with 'The Reservoir' however and you will soon find an excellent album of gloomy and melancholic songs that keep you enthralled from beginning to end.
