A great addition to this band's growing repertoire.

'Argia', Diabulus In Musica's third release, brings to fans the Female-Fronted Symphonic refrains of the superb Delain, the wide emotional pendulum of Balance Of Power and the heaviness of the outstanding Unsun. I'll admit, it took a few spins to get into the groove of 'Argia' but once I did, I began to appreciate how technical DIM is, and how at their core there is some great layered songwriting with great care being given to prevent this band from sounding like innumerable other Female-Fronted Symphonic acts.

Starting with the opener, the poignant 'Et Resurrexit (Libera Me)' which begins with a reverent, almost worshipful feel and ends with choral chants and hums that flow into the heavy 'From The Embers', a true Symphonic track with massive layers of keyboards and pounding drums. DIM mix the angelic vocals of Zuberoa Aznarez with the devilish growls of Gorka Elso and it was at louder volumes that brought a natural nodding of the head in time with the beat as the song rises with strength. The CD highlight came at three with the fantastic Symphonic Metal of 'Inner Force', a glorious song with vocals that ascend heavenward, keyboards to die for, layers of vocal harmonies, machine gun style guitar riffs and a furious accompaniment from the rhythm section. It's perhaps a tad short for as one really gets into the lay of the song and begins to get carried away; the ending comes all too soon. 'Inner..' is the kind of song that would be a great track to extend into the six or seven minute playing time to allow a fan to have the feeling of extended escapism. 'Furia de Libertad' features the talents of Sirenia's Ailyn whilst the dark, wicked sounding 'Encounter At Chronos' Maze' showcases the incredible voice of Thomas Vikström (Therion, Brazen Abbott). Allow yourself to enjoy the gorgeous piano and lush guitars of the moving 'Eternal Breeze', the spiteful 'Spoilt Vampire', the wind instruments and keyboards of 'Maitagarri' and the incredible drums of 'Healing.'

Broken down, the music of Diabulus In Musica is complete, meaning one would be hard pressed to be able to say how the songwriters could expound on what it is they laid on track. With the exception of wanting a few of the songs to last a little longer to really have time to get lost in the track's feel and be carried away, 'Argia' is a great release. The music is complex with some heavy and loud tracks, while others are reflective and soft. Saintly vocals mix nicely with death grunts while keyboards and guitars add to the pounding drums and galloping bass. All in all, a great addition to this band's growing repertoire.
