Highly recommended!

There are two different sides to Ron Keel's musical persona – there is Ron Keel, the front-man of Heavy Metal/Hard Rock acts such as Steeler or Keel, and Ronnie Lee Keel, whom we know as a Country Music artist. Returning with his newest release, this time under his own name – with mostly original material – Keel brings together the best of both worlds. As a result, 'Metal Cowboy' is "Keel-meets-the-modern-day-Lynyrd-Skynyrd" – and whatever genre you'd classify it as, contemporary Southern Rock, Country Rock or whatever, the effect of this combination is simply stunning.

On the album, there are songs filled with tasty Bluesy licks, tailored for night gigs in smoky bars ('When Love Goes Down'), Skynyrd-influenced guitar codas ('The Cowboy Road'), a bit of radio-friendly Melodic Rock with Country influences here and there ('Wild Forever') and dynamic Southern Rock pieces ('Long Gone Bad', 'My Bad'). A Boogie Rock-oriented song 'What Would Skynyrd Do' pays tribute to the legendary Southern group with its melody, characteristic background vocals and obviously in the lyrics. And if anyone remembers Keel's 1989 release 'Larger Than Life' and 'Evil Wicked Mean & Nasty', there's a re-recorded and updated version with a more Country-ish vibe to it. There is also a place for charming, emotional ballads taking a listener for a trip down the memory lane – with Keel either portrayed as homesick Tennessean remembering his home ('Just Like Tennessee') or a mature musician reckoning with past rights and wrongs ('Singers, Hookers And Thieves'). The latter features an impressive duet with another Hard Rock screamer Paul Shortino (ex-Rough Cutt, ex-Quiet Riot, King Kobra), who's one of many brilliant musicians who contributed to the record. Apart from "Duke Fame", there are contributions from Mike Vanderhule (Y&T) on drums, Tesla's Frank Hannon on guitar and Geno Arce (IronHorse, Keel) on bass and more! Even more impressive than the line-up are the vocals of Keel himself – while still able to deliver some high pitched screaming vocals, now he sings in a feisty Johnny Van Zant-esque manner.

'Metal Cowboy' portrays Ron Keel as a fully-fledged artist, able to draw from both his Hard Rock roots and Country music inspirations. His solo album delivers enough of pedal steel guitar, banjo and/or dobro-driven ballads to satisfy the Country/Southern Rock fans and enough of powerful guitar anthems to suit Hard Rock oriented listeners. It's a perfect compromise between Metal and Country as well as between musical tradition and a contemporary sound. Highly recommended!
