Definitely worth the wait.

I've been looking forward to this album ever since I first heard about it, some ten years ago. The project started life when Firehouse vocalist C.J. Snare expressed an interest in recording a solo album. On board came guitarist Chris Green (Pride, Furyon, and currently touring as a member of Tyketto) to co-write the songs, the project turned into a band, and so Rubicon Cross was born. Being a huge fan of all the aforementioned bands, my interest was piqued immediately. Incidentally, those of you that attended the very first Firefest in Bradford in 2005 may recall that Snare and Green performed one of these songs during the Friday night pre-show all-star jam session. For the reasons why the album took so long to be released, check out the interview with Green elsewhere this issue.

Musically, it's very much a blend of Firehouse and Furyon. Now that may seem like a lame comparison to make when you regard the personnel involved, but it's actually a fair description. Snare has a very distinctive voice, which will inevitably remind listeners of Firehouse, but the huge melodies for which they are famous for are abundant through this album. However, musically it's a far heavier beast with a thoroughly contemporary edge, replete with deeper technical arrangements more in the vein of Green's output with Furyon. Snare handles the style extremely well, but its guitarist Green who completely steals the show with his scything riffs and jaw-dropping solos, though all work perfectly well within the songs and avoid being overplayed and flashy – in my humble opinion there is no better guitarist in the business.
The likes of 'Locked And Loaded', 'Next Best Enemy' and 'Bleed With Me' are riff-driven monsters with a contemporary edge, a little in the vein of Nickelback but without being as formulaic sounding as the Vancouver quartet, while 'You Will Remember Me' is a searing up-tempo Rocker that disguises a darker lyric. 'Moving On', 'R U Angry' and the Metallic 'Kill Or Be Killed' demonstrate darker styles with tempo-changing arrangements. As for the two ballads, the beautifully moving 'Save Me Within' strays into Alter Bridge territory, while 'Shine' is an acoustic-based, gently-building inspirational message. The album closes on a lighter note with the tongue-in-cheek 'All The Little Things', a great fun song that strays into Pop/Punk territory, but still fits within the parameters of the rest of the material.

Brilliantly mixed by Rick Beato (Shinedown, Furyon), the album caters for lovers of melody, Metal, great lyrics and those with a penchant for a contemporary sound, thus mass appeal is ensured. Definitely worth the wait.
