Thirty tracks for thirty years; a career...an institution...

Thirty years is a long time in Rock. To survive, you have to adapt, keep people interested and have something no one else does. Generally, to survive also means that you could be considered an institution. Danish band D-A-D (abbreviated because of some Disney disharmony with their original moniker) have been around for that long that their blurb affords them that title.

Institution equals good, doesn't it? Well, 'Eastenders' celebrates thirty years next year, TB is remarkably hardy and the B.N.P./National Front are a long serving bastion of hatred...so not necessarily in every case is the answer. An institution is only good when the work it's based on is quality. Luckily for D-A-D... that's subjective. Unluckily for D-A-D... I'm reviewing.
They start out as a Psychobilly, Cowboy Punk outfit. But then they take a journey, they don't stay there; they settle for something far more robust and Fireworks friendly. Strangely, the early sound, so stuck in the Lenin Cowboys and Alabama 3 sound, is now a lot more popular due to a soured up Volbeat variation, but this Noir Country offer doesn't often please. It's just too samey, even if 'Marlboro Man' has all the attitude and pastiche fun to succeed. 'Call Of The Wild' sounds like a 1980s Indie track in the chorus but is too laid back to shake off the shackles and 'It's After Dark' and it's 'Dancing In The Dark' twinkly synths are almost risible.

They do essay some Glammy charm in 'I Won't Cut My Hair' and 'Jihad' (really) has a simplistic, sleazy try and a bothersome solo. 'Bad Craziness' might be the best thing on the first disc, chopped and shaped Beatles riffs, a ramshackle chorus and stabbing Rock raucousness winning out. But this part doesn't connect.
The second disc is a different matter...only just. 'Empty Heads' show the journey; it's bigger, greasier and more Classic Rock like but with Industro leanings and a nicely restrained chorus whilst 'Home Alone 4' celebrates its differences with a laid back sunny verse and some interesting melodies. The seeds were there in the first disc – 'Riding With Sue' even has Geek Chic, vocals on the right side of whine and handclaps in the acoustic line, rather Hold Steady and then... they go all Primal. There's 'I Want What She's Got' and the fuzzed up but swaggering vibe of 'Give Out But Don't Give Up' and balls for miles.

Thirty tracks for thirty years; a career...an institution... not consistently good but with flashes of brilliance.. .is that what a career is worth? Ask certain Premier League football clubs. Ask the certain political parties. Ask D-A-D.
