This is as Gothic Rock/Metal as it comes.

If anything, this is as Gothic Rock/Metal as it comes, pessimistic, and in some moments almost crushing, the baritone voice of Kuba brings to life songs talking of pain, hopelessness and death. Nothing fake about Sweet Ermengarde for what they do, they do so with a belief in their song's topics that mean something to them. And for that, if absolutely nothing else they are to be commended.

But the kudos shouldn't stop there, for the members of this Gothic Metal band are really a great group of musicians that allow for each of their instruments to take a spot in the song that makes sense. What is evident is how the songwriters make sure the listener pays attention to what it is the songwriter says should be paid attention to. Whether it is the heavy bass work of Lars, the sweet (in a devilish sweet kind of way) guitar work of Marco or Danny or the mesmerizing drums of Rafael; we as listeners are told when to concentrate on a certain instrument instead of everything being thrown into a blender and it all coming at you at once. That style of songwriting is what makes Goth the great genre that it is. Nothing Symphonic, Hard or Progressive about 'Raynham Hall' at all, but yet in its own disturbing way, devilishly melodic and subdued.

Obvious similarities to Type O Negative could be made, but when really hearing the songs of SE what comes to mind more are the disturbing sounds of the crushing, hopeless heaviness of The Vision Bleak, the creepiness of Rwake, and the vocal styles of Sentenced. Think of these comparisons as you hear the soullessness of 'Kisses', the cinematic western 'Days Of Heaven', the amazing guitar of the nightmare inducing 'For This Moment', the horror of the CD highlight 'Necropolitan Rest', and the closing track, the depressing, gloomy seven minute instrumental 'The Call Of The First' that slowly, methodically fades into obscurity like a movie that fades into black. Well done indeed.

It was the great Blue Oyster Cult who were one of the first bands to really incorporate a touch of Goth into their sound, and since then Gothic Metal has become a genre all of its own. However, with that having been said, Goth Metal is one of the genres that requires a certain amount of talent to pull it off (much like Symphonic Metal). Done correctly and you have astonishing bands like HIM, Anathema, and others. To add to that list is Sweet Ermengarde, for they too are one of the good ones.
