Dreamier and far more melodic than 2011's stunning 'Beneath', 'Fallen Leaves And Dead Sparrows' should get the attention it so richly deserves.

Finland's Amoral have been on a winding road. 'Fallen Leaves And Dead Sparrows' is their sixth album in ten years, but more remarkable than that is the vast changes that have occurred in this time. Beautiful in its light production and sensitivity, 'Fallen Leaves...' is a far cry from the technical Death Metal which announced their arrival on debut album 'Wound Creations' only a decade ago. But since Ari Koivunen joined in 2008 their sound has changed beyond recognition.

The change in front-man and sound are indeed brave moves and ones which have ultimately proved to be a masterstroke. The first three heavier albums were solid Metal releases taking in Thrash, Death and Progressive genres. Solid as they are, they were never going to set the Metal world alight. While only the Prog element has survived musically from that time, the Amoral which produced 'Fallen Leaves...' is a technically more adventurous outfit.

'If Not Here, Where?' and 'On The Other Side Pt II' balance hard 'n' heavy guitar riffs with beautifully nuanced vocals. 'The Storm Arrives' comes in on the heavier end of the scale with some terrifically affecting staccato rhythms.

With all the Progressive bluster replete with jolting rhythms, it is the track 'Blueprints' which leaps out from the album. Like Led Zeppelin's 'That's The Way' it's a stunning acoustic ballad which shows Koivunen's voice in a way that had until now been untapped. Elsewhere, the throaty growls, however, feel a little contrite and never fully sit comfortably in the song. Thankfully these are few and far between but they still manage to linger long after they fade out.

Dreamier and far more melodic than 2011's stunning 'Beneath', 'Fallen Leaves And Dead Sparrows' should get the attention it so richly deserves.
