There's much here to commend.

JC Jess are a French band who offer a passionate blend of Heavy Metal, Hard Rock and Stoner Rock. 'Broken Bones' is the follow up to 2011's 'Battlefront'. In the intervening period they've attempted to build a live following in their native France and consolidate their place on the French Metal scene.

There's much here to commend; opener and title track 'Broken Bones', for example, comes sprinting out of the blocks with a nice punchy riff, and a bit of a James Hetfield retch in the vocals circa 'Kill 'Em All'. Second track 'Remember' is a bit more sophisticated – in fact quite classy – instantly demonstrating that JCJ have more than one string to their bow.

In fact, they have several more. 'Irreversible Damages' is a very nicely done power ballad, 'Give Me More' (a song title not a request) has an interesting and quirky riff and 'Pissed Off' (I'm not) has a swinging, Doom-laden riff and a catchy chorus. Indeed, most tracks presented here have something going for them; stand out song for me being the superb 'I Know'. The album needed a track to really lift it at that point (track nine), and this is one of genuine quality. Nice riff, nice melody and a great solo.

Also impressive are the three acoustic tracks included here as a bonus entries. One of these is a nice acoustic reworking of 'Remember', while one of the others 'Moment Of Lightness' has a style and vocal melody reminiscent of Joni Mitchell. This bodes well when considering the band's plans to undertake an acoustic tour with the intention of taking the music of JC Jess to a wider audience.

I've heard far worse albums than 'Broken Bones' and I've heard far worse albums than 'Broken Bones' on major labels. This album is alright. However, whether it's distinctive, powerful or good enough to pull through and strut its stuff on a Europe-wide or American stage, that's a different matter altogether. Good luck to them!
