The second album from Swiss Heavy Metal warriors Distant Past

The second album from Swiss Heavy Metal warriors Distant Past is a rampaging follow-up to their 2010 debut 'Alpha Draconis' but one that takes them on a different musical journey.

Much of this is down to the change of pipes, as it were, on 'Utopian Void'. Lead singer Angelo Schafer's deeper American-sounding vocals have been replaced by Jvo Julmy's warbling screech. Certainly not a bad thing as Julmy is a man possessed of an impressive voice, but it does plunge them into a different sound and it's not necessarily the right step.

Those expecting a similar dark, Progressive-minded Metal album to the previous release could come away disappointed. '...Void' is more direct in its unashamed Heavy Metal worship with unstoppable riffs and fist raising Power Metal flourishes.

The breathless 'Sceptre' and the equally full-on 'Guided By The Stars' utilise some busy bass lines, wild drumming and furious, heavy guitar riffs all hammering away to keep up with Julmy's forceful vocals.

Taken away from DP's canon and heard on its own, '...Void' is rough around the edges but solid enough at its heart to warrant repeated attention. The gloriously chunky guitar tones used for some galloping riffs hark back to Metal's glory days.

'Utopian Void' will not prove to be the Metal album we've all been waiting for, nor will it ignite the career of Distant Past. But, if this is the heading they continue on, with album number three then we could well hear something very exciting indeed. The Progressive mindset of that debut was enough to be explored but face it fellas, you just wanted to Rock out like the old days, didn't you!
