All of the songs on 'Recover' are of a similar pace and feature whimsical Progressive elements amongst some AOR-like melodies and hooks.

I read somewhere that the third full-length release from Italian Goth Metal outfit Armonight would be entitled 'Recover' and that it would be a musical step forward from their first two albums. I have to say I am unfamiliar with the band so 'Suffering & Passion' (2010) and 'Tales From The Heart' (2012) passed me by. After recovering (see what I did there?) from the first couple of plays I have to say that if this is a step forward then I didn't really miss out on anything previously.

The first two releases received criticism based on an over melancholic approach and a lack of originality, but I'm afraid that is a trend that continues with 'Recover'. The short instrumental and atmospheric intro piece 'Desire' hinted at something promising but once the vocals kicked in during second song 'Night Of Illusions', I could sense my interest levels dipping. Sy, it has to be said, is not the greatest singer in the world and pales in comparison to some of the other stunning female vocalists out there who have enough quality to give their respective bands material an immediate edge. She has a rather one-dimensional style and lacks the range to carry the songs. Added to this there is an accent issue that renders many of the lyrics tough to decipher and this is a feature throughout. All of the songs on 'Recover' are of a similar pace and feature whimsical Progressive elements amongst some AOR-like melodies and hooks. Synths and keyboard textures underpin the material and though some of the guitar work (courtesy of the band's creator Fjord) is rather good, the repetitive riffs that feature too often hint at a lack of imagination.

Armonight seem to have undergone numerous line-up changes since the band's inception back in 2008 and this obviously hinders creative stability. The decent production values on 'Recover' gives the instrumentation a nice clarity but if they intend to continue, and there is certainly enough in place to work with, then I suggest a re-think in terms of vocals and a little more thought in terms of song structure.
