Album featuring fourteen old songs and two brand new ones.

Veteran Swedes Bad Habit will soon be marking a quarter of a century as a band which is as good a reason as any for this look back on their back catalogue with Timeless featuring fourteen old songs and two brand new ones in the form of ‘Turning Water Into Wine’ and ‘Rock This Town’. The two latest efforts will doubtless garner considerable attention as they represent something of a departure from the bands slick AOR sound, having something of an alternative vibe and, in the case of the latter, mildly irritating chain-gang vocals with the title repeated ad infinitum. Whether either of these will usher in a new era for Bad Habit remains to be seen and it is unfortunate that they really do come across as inferior to much of the bands previous efforts highlighted across the remainder of Timeless.

Once the latest material has been dispensed with Timeless is a glorious romp through Bad Habit’s career to date from the classy ‘Play The Game’ and sing-along-anthem ‘Heart of Mine’ and going right the way back to debut single ‘Need Somebody’ that was included on mini-album Young and Innocent from 1986. What they do best is catchy three minute melodic rockers with attitude and a biting edge and this is best exemplified on Above and Beyond’s ‘I Don’t Want You’ and ‘Surrender’. Compilations of this nature will always attract some criticism for omitting personal favourites and what fans consider to be true ‘best of’ moments but it is hard to argue against the inclusion of gems such as ‘Rowena’, ‘Winner Takes It All’ and ‘Living On The Edge’, all from the acclaimed After Hours.

Timeless will undoubtedly have more appeal for those seeking an introduction to Bad Habit although the two new songs should ensure healthy sales amongst the bands core fanbase, whilst at the same time raising many an eyebrow along the way.
