Controlled, polished, classy it may be, but it’s an exciting album too.

‘V’ is the fifth album (surprisingly enough) from Australian band Voyager; “Traditional Classic Rock with a modern edge”? “Pop sensibility with Modern Progressive heaviness”? Actually both descriptions are appropriate and would do just as well. ‘V’ is a very controlled, polished, classy, and professional sounding affair which was funded, it appears, by another Kickstarter campaign. Its chock full of good riffs, has good energy and presents a band sounding like they mean it. Voyager have a good live pedigree as well, having supported the likes of Devin Townsend, Children of Bodom, Nightwish and Epica.

Initial single ‘Hyperventilating’ opens the album in fine style; a synth riff is augmented by crunching guitar, melodic verse and chorus, driving drums and an edgy guitar solo. Current single ‘Breaking Down’ follows, with a string sound intro and strong guitar ushering in more of the same. There is clear commercial potential here. ‘A Beautiful Mistake’ is more aggressive, though features a nice blend of male and female vocals and doesn’t lose any sense of melody.

While the early tracks are welcoming and accessible, ‘V’ is an album that only gets fully into its stride later on, with tracks getting a bit heavier, more ambitious and more varied as the album progresses. ‘Orpheus’, for example, is a striking track with hints of a vocal growl and tons of drama. ‘It’s A Wonder’ (the pick of the bunch for me) really Rocks, clearly displaying the band’s sense of dynamics and potential for Symphonic Rock grandeur. Another highlight is ‘Summer Always Comes Again’, a powerfully presented ballad which segues nicely into rousing album closer ‘Seasons Of Age’.

Throughout, Danny Estrin’s vocals are crisp and clear. However it’s the edgy guitars, courtesy of Simone Dow and Scott Kay, along with the powerful drumming of Ashley Doodkorte that really lifts this album and nudges it into the genre-spanning territory that gives it its uniqueness.

Controlled, polished, classy it may be, but it’s an exciting album too. I didn’t dislike it at all when I started playing it, but by the time it had finished I was completely won over and ready to play it again. ‘V’ is a strong album and, if you don’t know them, Voyager are a band to look out for.
