It’s got a long way to go before it matches the likes of Tommy or Avantasia, but nonetheless is a clever, impassioned piece or work.

Rock Opera is something that can be majestic, breathtaking and exciting, but can just as often be a great steaming turd that sullies your CD player with it’s very existence. Either way, it’s generally rolled out with the best of intentions, something that can certainly be said of this project from Teddy Jonasson.

You can’t have a rock opera without a story, and this one throws ghosts, princesses, kings and queens about like Shakespeare on acid. Six singers have been drafted in and, although there are only 9 songs here, the full opera has 29. I don’t know why we don’t get the whole thing, as it seems off to release a disjointed version. If it was rubbish I wouldn’t mind, but after a few plays I found myself quite getting into ‘The Royal Ghost’, which has an impressive variety about it. Hell, anything with a character called ‘King Catley’ (surely after Bob?) is okay by me. The singers involved will not be known to many of you out there, except Andreas Eklund, (who plays The Ghost), who is the lead singer for House Of Shakira. All are, however, pretty decent, with special mention to Swedish opera singer Emilia Feldt, who as Queen Hazel really has a stunning voice. The songs are well written, with plenty of emotion and a good mix of musical styles. It’s not all bombastic rock, but with a helping of folk and opera thrown in at times. Production could be better, if I’m honest, as it seems to be quite light. Some of the songs would have benefited from a more dramatic mix, and the lightness robs them of some of the emotion, which is a shame.

As rock operas go, ‘The Royal Ghost’ is certainly worth a listen, although I would much rather hear the whole thing. It’s got a long way to go before it matches the likes of Tommy or Avantasia, but nonetheless is a clever, impassioned piece or work that will surely be wonderful onstage.
