Combining elements of Helloween, Nightwish and even Dragonforce. this debut album should gain Juvaliant a secure foothold amongst their peers.

Austria’s Juvaliant come with a few ready made label attached, voluntarily sticking themselves in the boxes marked ‘Symphonic’, ‘Progressive’ and ‘Power’, happy to lay their colours out for all to see. Mind you, there’s a veritable plethora of other bands already filling up those particular boxes, and Juvaliant need to be pretty special to compete.

As with many of this type of album, they start off with a mood setting instrumental, something I always find rather dull. Once into the music, however, ‘Inhuman Nature’ becomes quite captivating.

Juvaliant use quite a lot of orchestral backing to go with their smooth power metal. It tends to come in during lengthy instrumental breaks, and gives some of the songs a real boost, adding a bit of pomp and ceremony a guitar solo wouldn’t have. Not to say there aren’t guitar solos, as there are plenty, showing a real technical ability from Robert Schonleitner. Vocalist Thomas Strubler has a pretty classic sounding power metal voice, the sort of thing you’d hear in Helloween, Stratovarius and the like, high pitched and nicely controlled. It’s all about the music really, and it’s when the guitar and keyboards/strings combine that ‘Inhuman Nature’ really comes alive. They manage to tip what would have been a good album into one that you really should investigate further. ‘Hells Roundabout’, for example, has a very classical feel to it, an edge that makes me think of Richie Blackmore getting together with Andre Matos. It’s all very European in feel and sound, and when a track clicks it really comes alive.

Juvaliant have managed to fuse their stated genres together with some remarkable skill, combining elements of Helloween, Nightwish and even Dragonforce to produce a debut album that should gain them a secure foothold amongst their peers. More please.

I have to agree with the above review. I've never understood what the fascination is with these short introductions that really doesn't do a whole lot. I suppose it could be argued that it "sets the mood." OK, I guess.

After hearing this for the first time, I took off the headphones, sat back for a moment, and I left with a vision of Juvaliant as a hybrid of Sabaton, Kamelot and the vocal styling of Royal Jester. All great bands to be sure, and what is heard here is a strong debut.

The impressive guitars of "Hell's Roundabout," the pompous, stirring "On Wings of Steel," the intensity that builds during the opening moments of "Live To Die," were all CD highlights, and the closing track "Cold Distance of the Universe," would fit perfectly on any Nightwish release.

It will be interesting to see what the future holds for this band. With a powerhouse label like Limb Music behind them, (the same label that has such heavyweights as Adagio, Black Majesty, Mob Rules, Rhapsody of Fire, Human Fortress and Eldritch,) anything is possible.
