Italian outfit Skill in Veins raided the metal jukebox to come up with a classic 80s style offering.

Heads down, see you at the end. Which more or less sums up this first release from Italian outfit Skill in Veins, who have raided the metal jukebox to come up with a classic 80s style offering.

Impressive stuff from young Italian guitarist Andrea (that’s a bloke with a girl’s name – bit like a boy named Sue) Lanza, though not surprising considering his staple diet of Guns N’ Roses, Aerosmith, Skid Row, Megadeth and Metallica, smatterings of which can be heard throughout this release. With a little help from a strong supporting cast including producer Alessandro Del Vecchio, previously associated with the likes of Eden’s Curse, Axe, Edge of Forever and the Moonstone Project, Andrea delivers a biting debut – not without it’s clichés, but then isn’t that what 80’s hair metal’s all about?

‘Can’t Ride My Soul’ lays the cards straight on the table, with it’s sleazy groove getting under the skin like a tattoo needle – a formula followed by ‘Skulls on the Way’ and ‘Youth Times.’ But be warned – don’t play this in front of granny (unless of course she’s that way inclined!)

One would be forgiven for thinking CJ Snare makes a guest appearance on ‘I’m Living My Life’ such is the similarity between vocalist Gabriele Gozzi and the Firehouse frontman. ‘Sick Mind’ is a spit in your face style rocker, mixing classic Axl style squawling with incendiary riffing and a mid section lifted straight out of the aforementioned’s classic ‘Welcome to the Jungle.’

‘You’re Doing it Again’ gets the funk on, leading into some great harmony work, backed up once again by that ‘down n’ dirty’ guitar sound. The harmonica fuelled ‘Just One Drink’ grinds along, followed by lone ballad ‘Don’t Need You to Cry’ – nothing new but a strong addition all the same. From there on in you’ve got the picture, with the final three tracks – ‘The Way Out’, ‘We Don’t Cry’ and in particular the seven minute ‘We Don’t Believe in Fables’ bringing SIV’s debut to a storming finale.
