It’s good but don’t watch it expecting anything juicy.

I’m a huge fan of Bad Company and I think Paul Rodgers is one of the finest British singers ever, but I don’t know a lot about the band other than their music. So this documentary was an ideal way for me to learn more about Bad Company. The band themselves talk us through the birth and life of the band and there is the occasional anecdote or memory by people connected to them but it is mainly Simon Kirke, Rodgers and Mick Ralphs reminiscing about their past. It was cool to learn some things that I didn’t already know and it was a great insight into how BC wrote their songs, the stories behind some and how they work as a live unit.

That said, this ninety minute documentary feels as though it only scratches the surface and by today’s standards is very tame in what is revealed and talked about, there’s no scandal or revelations to be heard here. I think it’s a cool watch for hardcore fans and a fantastic introduction for those who know very little of BC’s life and history. You can tell this documentary was made to be a gentle ride and celebration of the good times, but it does occasionally hint at issues between band members and drug abuse, but never goes into detail. It would have been a totally different watch had these darker sides to the bands existence been revealed and discussed more openly, in some of the interviews you do feel as though the three surviving original members are on good terms with each other now and keen to continue the existence of BC through live shows and new music. So unearthing things that the band perhaps doesn’t wish to include would be counterproductive in what is supposed to be a factual yet celebratory ride through the band’s past.

One thing I did find odd is that the documentary talks about BC right up until Rodgers’ departure from the band following the ‘Rough Diamonds’ album in the early Eighties. As most BC fans will know Ralphs and Kirke continued using the band name right up until the mid Nineties with Brain Howe and Robert Hart on vocals, but none of this is mentioned and it is as if it never happened. It’s made even stranger by the fact that other solo projects and activities by the band members in this timeframe are briefly mentioned. Rodgers mentions about the band’s name been plagiarised, been annoyed by this and it being his reason for reuniting and reclaiming the band name in the late Nineties, I can only assume this was aimed at his former band mates, but it is never discussed and I’m surmising this.

It’s good but don’t watch it expecting anything juicy!
