Sing along – in whatever language – and become a ‘Verteidiger des wahren Bloedsinns’.

When I was asked to write this I didn‘t quite know how to do it; how to review the new album “Nur die Besten werden alt” by J.B.O. – a German-speaking band – for a U.K based magazine. I will try to explain why their 10th studio album – irrespective of the language – should be heard by everyone into good, fun, intelligent and – of course – loud Metal music.

J.B.O. was founded twenty-five years ago by the two front-men Hannes Holzmann and Vito C. as a totally fun project. They called themselves “James Blast Orchestra” but the record company of German easy listening band James Last Orchestra sued J.B.O in 1996 for the likelihood of name confusion). Their first couple of concerts mainly consisted of metal-ish cover versions with awesomely funny new lyrics. If one could describe what J.B.O.’s music is like, I can only agree with the band who say it‘s “Comedy Metal”. Their lyrics, their outfits/appearance (pink is the new black!) and the way they re-interpret old Pop songs is unique and surely nothing to be analysed in detail but just enjoyed.

You may now understand that their latest creation ‘Nur die...’ (‘Only The Good Get Old’) is surely not an album where any highly sophisticated musical elements need to be discovered – even though the musical abilities of these guys are fantastic! The album contains nineteen songs; thirteen Heavy Metal songs you can just bang your head along too and six “comedic” intermissions. If you can find the special edition, amongst the extra goodies you will also find a bonus disc which features 13 J.B.O. mega hits all recorded with in brillliant sound quality.

The album itself starts with ‘Vier Finger für ein Hallelujah’ (‘Four Fingers For A Hallelujah’) which is followed by ‘Death Is Death’ – a brilliant ode to ‘Life is Life’ by Opus – very typical J.B.O. ‘Sakradi mei Sack is hi’ (‘Holy Shit, My Balls Are Broken’) in Franconian patois may be very tough to understand by foreigners but it’s such a fun song and has so much feeling – just like the whole album does – that it will surely be enjoyed while being badly drunk at the next party. ‘Schule aus’ (‘School’s Out’ – Alice Cooper), ‘Metal No. 666’ (‘Mambo No. 5’ – Lou Bega) and ‘Das Bier ist da zum Trinken’ (‘The Beer Is There For Drinking’ instead of “these boots that were made for walking” as sung by Nancy Sinatra) are three more fantastic, funny cover versions. Insanely cool ‘Was würde Jesus tun?’ (‘What Would Jesus do?’) and ‘Die Waldfee’ (roughly translated ‘Whoops A Daisy’) are my personal smile-inducing highlights.

All I can say is grab yourself some friends, some beers and just switch your brains off for a while. Sing along – in whatever language – and become a ‘Verteidiger des wahren Bloedsinns’ (‘Defender Of The True Nonsense’), don't take life too seriously and just enjoy having a big, fun, pink party!
