Sweden’s Harmony return after almost four years missing in action, their new album a fantastic mix of Progressive Metal and Hard Rock. Ian Johnson talks with the band’s guitarist Markus Sigfridsson about the new CD, their new singer and why it’s taken so long to record ‘Theatre of Redemption’.

This is your third album to date but why, if you don’t mind me asking, has it taken you four to five years to record each of your albums? You’re putting Def Leppard to shame! Was part of the reason losing Henrik Bath, your previous singer?


Henrik leaving the band actually had nothing to do with it. It´s a long time but we’ve been busy doing other things. The main reason is that we are involved in another band called Darkwater, which Henrik and Magnus decided to focus on. We have released two albums with Darkwater during these twelve years and I have also released two albums under the name of 7 Days. We also have full time jobs, and some of us also have families and other things that happen or keep you busy. So it’s just not that easy to release albums but it won’t be five years until the next one.

On the album your new lead singer is Daniel Heiman of Heed and Lost Horizon, who I think does a magnificent job. How did he end up joining the band?

We came to know Daniel through a friend who knows him really well, so we were just lucky. We had some auditions for the new album but we felt that none were as good as Henrik and we’d always thought about Daniel since he did his guest performance on the track ‘Inner Peace’ on our second album ‘Chapter II: Aftermath’. So it was natural to choose him and we are really happy that he’s singing on the album, he really brings a new dimension to our sound. Although Daniel is only a guest singer but we hope to work with him in the future as well. He gets a lot of proposals to sing on albums and he usually doesn’t do many guest vocals.

The musicianship on the album is amazing. You must have worked really hard to get everything you wanted from it on to the new CD?

Thanks again, yes we have really worked very hard and paid a little extra attention to details this time around. We recorded most of the album in our own studios, which is relaxing and gives you the chance to “perfect” everything and take your time and not leave much up to chance.

The music on the new album is, for me anyway, a lot more mature in sound and style than the earlier albums. By this I mean the youthful sound of ten years ago has been replaced by older heads.

I fully agree. We have evolved in everything from our playing skills to the way we approach song writing and we are also much better at handling the whole process of making an album, you know, producing, recording etc.

The songs also seem less frantic and more laid back in the way they have been written than before. Was this an intentional way of writing the new album, letting the songs breath and grow rather than ramming them down the fans’ throats?

I think that comes naturally as your writing and playing skills evolve, it’s nothing we actually think much about. But I’m glad that is the impression you get when you hear the music. We had a lot of songs to choose from though – I write a lot of music. That helps.

One thing I love about the album is the production which is stunning. Who produced it?

We produced it ourselves actually, but much of the praise should be given to Studio Fredman for the great mix that they did on the album. They did a really great job for us. The mix is everything

Is Harmony now a full time band for you all because I know that the members of the band have a lot of other acts that they are involved with. And with being such a busy group of musicians will you be able to go out and tour with the new album?

We’re a full time band except that Daniel is only a guest vocalist, so we have to wait and see what will happen in the future. On the touring front we can’t make any promises, we just have to wait and see what happens next. We don’t know if Daniel will sing with us live, he is always busy with other things.

What does the future hold for Harmony? Hopefully it won’t be another four or five years before we get a new album from you!

As boring as it sounds, again we have to wait and see, and wait for the response that we get for the new album. We hope to play live but like I said can’t make any promises. We will also start working on a new album; and it will not take us six years to complete this time!
