Requires several listens before you fully appreciate this particular Captain's wares, but it's worth the effort.

Shiver me timbers me hearties, and set sail on the high seas in search of treasure with Captain Black Beard! Okay...enough of the pirate-talk already, this isn't the Pirate-Metal that the band's name implies; this is something far more palatable indeed.

Ensuring mass appeal, this quartet from the beautiful city of Stockholm have a sound that has a modern feel akin to the likes of The Black Keys or Kings Of Leon (albeit with much better songs and lyrics that are actually intelligible!), yet the melodies of these potentially hit-making songs are straight out of the eighties.

'Before Plastic', CBB's sophomore album, begins with probably the two most straight forward and commercially accessible songs on offer, 'Please Come Home' and 'Somebody', featuring special guest guitar solos from ex-Kiss man Bruce Kulick on the former and fellow Swede Tommy Denander on the latter. 'New York City' picks up the pace with a frantic chugging riff, then 'Bad Girl' slows things down a little; a track very reminiscent of some of Kiss' slower output.

'Music Man' and the catchy 'Keep On Drivin'' brings forth more of a groove-driven approach, 'Aiming For Love' is an energetically bouncy number with a big chorus that melds CBB's current and old-school styles perfectly, then 'Shout' is highly reminiscent of a certain L.A. Glam Rock band – the repetitive "Shout" chant during the chorus leaves you under no illusion as to who influenced it! 'Life's What You Make It' is another groove-laden number with a big Bluesy edge, 'Takin' You Out' a hard-driving Rocker with a big chorus, while closing track 'Listen Up' is part mournful ballad on the verses and part moody Rocker on the chorus. It's quite unusual and successfully avoids becoming the clichéd ballad that the intro hints at.

The hooks throughout aren't exactly instant and require several listens before you fully appreciate this particular Captain's wares, but it's worth the effort.
